Two generations. 30 years. Driven by the 3 Es: Educate, Excite & Entertain👩‍🍳

Whether you’re new around here or have been pulling up a chair in our classroom since 1996, we wanted to officially introduce the mother-daughter duo behind Laurel Run Cooking School.

Three decades ago, my mom, Marcia, founded Laurel Run on our 11-acre property in historic Brownhelm, Ohio with a simple goal in mind: to share her love & knowledge of cooking and growing herbs with her local community. She believed a great cooking class should do three things:

• EDUCATE: Teach real kitchen skills & foundational cooking techniques to use at home. It’s just as important to understand the “why” behind a recipe as it is to know “what” to do in the kitchen.

• EXCITE: Cooking shouldn’t feel like a chore - it can be fun, approachable & creative. Proper knowledge builds confidence, and confidence makes cooking something to look forward to.

• ENTERTAIN: First and foremost: our classes are fun! We share plenty of entertaining kitchen stories (the good AND the bad), laugh through the process, and keep things relaxed. You’re not coming just for a cooking lesson; you’re coming for a great night out🥂

After earning a Master’s in Food Studies from NYU followed by culinary school, my career took me through NYC as a food magazine editor and private chef, then to Chicago managing PR & marketing for nearly 2 dozen restaurant concepts (where I was constantly in the kitchens working alongside our chefs).

Today, as second-generation co-owner, I’m honored to bring those culinary chops back home to carry our legacy forward.

From hands-on technique workshops and live demo classes to private celebrations and seasonal retreats, welcome to our little cooking school in the country!☺️

We can’t wait for you to join us in the kitchen!

Mother Nature sure has a sense of humor 🔥

We were all set to gather this Saturday for our WILD FIRE: Midsummer Rewilding Retreat. But between a forecast of heavy thunderstorms and the very real, thick Canadian wildfire smoke settling over Northeast Ohio this week, the universe sent us a loud and clear message.

Trying to host an outdoor wellness retreat focused on deep breathing, restorative yoga, and open-fire cooking in the middle of actual wildfire smoke just didn’t feel right (or safe!). If “rewilding” teaches us anything, it’s to yield to the rhythms of nature rather than fight them.

So, we are officially leaning into the shift.

WILD FIRE is being rescheduled to Saturday, September 12th 🍂✨

Honestly? This feels like exactly where this retreat was always meant to live. September at Laurel Run is my favorite time of year. We’ll be standing right on the threshold of autumn, meaning the air is crisper, the humidity drops, and gathering around a crackling open flame feels more aligned.

The rescheduled day is a late-summer transition experience featuring grounding yoga and a sound bath with sacred.rising.yoga, a personal fire ritual of release, and a hands-on, live-fire cooking workshop, with a sunset harvest dinner to follow.

If you already have a ticket, your spot automatically rolls over (check your inbox for an email from me with all the details!). And if the original July date didn’t work for your schedule, this is your second chance to join us September 12th!

We’ll be sharing closer looks at the updated menu and the specific magic we have planned over the next few weeks. In the meantime, head to the link in our bio to see the overview of the day and save your spot around the fire.

Stay safe, stay indoors, and we’ll see you soon at Laurel Run! 💫

May we make one small suggestion for your Tuesday evening? 😊

Skip the “What’s for dinner?” conversation and come spend the evening with us instead at Laurel Run!

We have just 5 seats left for our Bastille Day Orchard Picnic Soirée on Tuesday, July 14th, and it’s shaping up to be such a beautiful evening 🇫🇷

We’ll start with Apéro, then settle into a French picnic dinner with Confit Byaldi, Jambon-Beurre, Clafoutis, and a few other favorites. I’ll also be cooking throughout the evening, so you can relax with a glass of w**e, watch the demonstrations (& go home with all the recipes!) and simply enjoy being in the orchard as the sun sets.

No grocery shopping. No cooking. No dishes. Just good food, good w**e, and a lovely evening outdoors.

If you’ve been meaning to treat yourself to something a little different this summer, please find the reservation link below in the comments ✨

Laura

Hey, friends! Our latest email newsletter went out earlier today, and in case you missed it... it’s a packed one. ✉️✨

I’m sharing the full, beautiful whirlwind of our summer so far -- from filming a TV segment with New Day Cleveland to eating my way through Paris for some "macaron research," straight into a beautifully chaotic, nostalgic, 90s-style 4th of July family reunion at Laurel Run.

But most importantly, the kitchen doors are officially open again, and seats are already filling up fast for our July and August lineup:

🍾July 14: Bastille Day in the Orchard (A luxurious French picnic where I do the cooking while you watch the sunset)
🔥 July 18: WILD FIRE: A Midsummer Women's Rewilding Retreat
🍞 July 25: Beginner's Sourdough 101 with Dena's Table
👨‍🍳 August 8: The Parisian Pâtisserie: A Hands-On Macaron Masterclass
☀️ Plus: August Kids & Teens camps and our ever-popular Summer’s Bounty class -- posting later this week!

Catch up on the full story, get the link to watch our TV segment, and grab your seats before they’re gone.

01/19/2026

It’s a cold & blustery January day, which makes me even more grateful for the warmth of the kitchen and how things are moving at a much slower pace today. After our son turned 9 last week, I’ve been feeling just how quickly the days are blurring. It makes me crave intentionality, the kind you find in things that take time.

This morning’s sourdough pancakes were a quiet collaboration of local hands: apples from our friends at Hillcrest Orchards, maple syrup from North Ridge Farm down the street, and techniques gathered from my dear friend and resident sourdough teacher, Dena’s Table. But as I stood at the stove with the Amélie soundtrack playing, I was suddenly a world away.

That music always transports me back to my “previous life” as a young & hungry 20-something in New York City. I spent those years in a bit of a whirlwind, working as a magazine editor at Bon Appétit by day and as a private chef for a long-time family client on the Upper West Side by night. In my tiny 389 sq. ft. apartment, my kitchen became a true melting pot. I lived for the way food acted as a bridge, bringing together friends from every walk of life and every corner of the globe.

I miss that. I embrace those sweet memories deeply, but it saddens me to see that cultural tapestry feel so at risk in today’s landscape. It feels like the “melting pot” is being stripped away, bit by bit.

For me, cooking is one way to hold onto it. Every time we choose to cook with intention or share a meal with someone from a different walk of life, we are preserving that connection. Today, it’s just pancakes in a home kitchen in northeast Ohio, but it’s also a nod to the world I want to stay connected to and a reminder to slow down before the next year slips by 🤍

I love hearing other peoples’ food stories. What is one dish, song, or even place that transports you back to a different version of yourself? Feel free to share below ✨

Stay cozy,
Laura
