Her journey underscored the importance of mastering English, a crucial tool for her livelihood, and establishing a pathway to become an adult education instructor. Undeterred by language barriers, the following year, Trujillo, with the unwavering support of her husband, enrolled in the English As a Second Language (ESL) Program at Oxnard Adult School. “Oxnard Adult School was instrumental in equipping me with the skills I needed to secure a better job.”

From Mexico City to the classroom: Jesus Lopez-Varela's journey started with no English and no job. Today, he's teaching at Oxnard Adult School, helping students just like his former self. In 1987, Jesus arrived in the U.S. with dreams of better opportunities for his family. Oxnard Adult School gave him the tools to transform his life—ESL classes, career training, and a pathway to citizenship. Now he's passing it forward, teaching high school equivalency in Spanish to students from around the world."Students have to feel the joy of attending classes, not just because they have to," Jesus says.
