Today is National Nonprofit Day, and we can't think of a better way to celebrate than by sharing the story of one incredible Ventura College student. πŸ’›

Meet Ariadna.

Ariadna's family arrived in the United States when she was just four years old, with little material security but an abundance of heart. Growing up, she faced hardship and it was local public health programs that became a lifeline for her, sparking a passion for Public Health and Herbalism that would shape the rest of her life.

But her path hasn't been a straight line. As a young adult, Ariadna battled serious health struggles, and had to step away from college to fight for her life. She won that fight β€” fully recovering and becoming a certified herbalist. Then in 2023, a back injury left her in pain and unable to work, and she realized: it was time to go back to school.

After sixteen years away, Ariadna enrolled at Ventura College in Fall 2024. Today, she's a full-time student carrying a 4.0 GPA, working toward a career in Public Health so she can return to Ventura County and serve the community that shaped her.

Scholarships like the Frank Nolan Memorial Scholarship, the Outreach Alliance of Ventura County Re-Entry Scholarship, and the Ventura College Holistic Studies Scholarship have meant so much more than financial support. In Ariadna's words, they represent "relief" β€” the chance to work fewer hours, focus on her studies, and keep showing up for her community.

She said it best at the 2026 scholarship awards ceremony: "Your investment does not end with me. It ripples outwardβ€”into families, into communities, into futures that are forever changed."

This is exactly why we do what we do. On National Nonprofit Day, thank you to every donor, volunteer, and supporter who makes stories like Ariadna's possible. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Once a Pirate, always a Pirate.

πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ A HUGE thank you to our Ventura College employee donors πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ

This year, 82 VC employees gave 620 gifts to support our students β€” and the impact goes far beyond the numbers.

Here's what makes this giving so powerful: every donation was directed to the program of the employee's choosing, spanning 29 programs at Ventura College. From scholarships to student support services to specific departments, our employees chose exactly where their generosity would make a difference.

Something many people don't realize: you can give directly to the program you care about most. Since 2021, employee donations have funded 53 different areas across campus β€” a testament to how deeply our faculty and staff are invested in this institution and its students.

And this year, employee giving grew by an incredible 86%. That kind of growth doesn't happen by accident β€” it happens because our VC family keeps showing up for our students, year after year.

As we head into a new school year, we want every employee who wants to support VC students to know it's never been easier to give year-round:

We did it β€” and then some! πŸŽ‰
Three years ago, the VCF Board of Directors launched the Invest in Success Campaign with one clear goal: make sure two of our most essential programs could keep supporting students for years to come β€” the Basic Needs Centers and the Ventura College Promise Program. The target was $7 million.
Today, we're so proud to share that we've surpassed that goal by over $100,000!πŸ–€πŸ§‘
Because of this incredible milestone, both programs will be able to support student success for many, many years ahead.
To everyone who donated, volunteered, or encouraged someone else to give: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This tremendous achievement was made possible by one thing β€” the power of community.
We are endlessly grateful to be part of a community that shows up for its students, again and again. πŸ™Œ

In 1973, Ventura College weathered it all β€” literally. From the Point Mugu earthquake to the extreme weather that tested our entire region, our students persevered and our community grew stronger together. And somewhere in the middle of it all, Gloria Steinem stopped by campus. ✨
Some things never change. Ventura College has always been a place where people show up for each other β€” and we want our alumni to stay part of that story.
If you're a VC alum, we'd love to have you in our growing alumni network. Click the link below to join and stay connected to the college that helped shape you. πŸŽ“
