Every time you glance at a clock, you are using a counting system invented by grain merchants in southern Mesopotamia around 3000 BCE.

They were not trying to define time. They were trying to divide barley.

Temple administrators in ancient Sumer faced a relentlessly practical problem: tracking rations for thousands of workers, splitting grain stores among foremen, storerooms, and households without leaving awkward remainders. Whatever base they chose for counting had to divide cleanly. They settled on 60.

Sixty has a quality that makes it almost uniquely useful. You can divide it evenly by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30. No smaller number of comparable magnitude offers that range. In a world of hand tallies and clay tablets, this was not a trivial advantage. A count of 60 could be split among two scribes or five households or twelve work gangs, and every time the answer came out whole.

The system is called sexagesimal, base 60, and it traveled outward from Sumerian storerooms into Babylonian astronomy.

Babylonian astronomers divided the sky into 360 degrees, one per day of their approximate year. Each degree subdivided into 60 minutes of arc. Each minute into 60 seconds. The same logic governed both counting grain and mapping stars: keep everything divisible, keep the fractions clean.

Persian scholars inherited Babylonian astronomical tables. Greek astronomers received those tables and built on them. Ptolemy, writing his astronomical compendium "Almagest" in the 2nd century CE, used sexagesimal notation throughout. Islamic scholars of the medieval period translated, extended, and preserved that tradition. European astronomers received it back through Arabic texts.

By the time the first mechanical clocks appeared in 13th-century Europe, the 60-minute hour was not a design decision. It was simply what time was.

No one convened a committee. No mathematician decreed the choice. The system survived because every generation of scholars found it too practical to replace. Base 60 kept working, so base 60 stayed.

Today, every clock divides an hour into 60 minutes. Every map divides a circle into 360 degrees. Every GPS satellite transmits coordinates in units of degrees, minutes, and seconds, in a framework built for a Sumerian storeroom five thousand years ago.

The grain counters of Sumer did not know they were building the frame that time would run on.

A system designed for barley became the grammar of the world's clocks.
