HumanizEDU When teachers thrive, students thrive. Be Seen. Be Heard. Be Valued.

08/25/2026

Every August it happens: notebooks full of ideas, calendars packed with PD, new frameworks we can't wait to try, and hearts full of real hope.

We've done the trainings. Read the research. Talked it through with other educators. We can see the twenty things that could make this year better.

And here's what we keep learning: the most important thing you establish at the start of the school year isn't another system. It's a different way of being inside the system.

May is won in September, just not the way you think.

We wrote about what that actually looks like, and why it matters more than any new framework you bring back this fall.

I've been wanting to sit down and just talk to you about this.

No slides. No script. Just me explaining what the three pathways actually are, who they're for, and what it looks like to be inside one.

Watch this. And if something lands, the booking link is in the comments.

Pathway One starts August 28th.

This past weekend, we sat down with educators heading into a new school year and talked honestly about what's ahead, the pressure, the excitement, the exhaustion that's already creeping in before the first bell even rings.

And one thing kept coming back up: this year isn't just about surviving. It's about thriving.

That's not a throwaway line for us. It's one of our core beliefs: when teachers thrive, students thrive. You can't pour into 25+ kids a day from an empty cup, and you shouldn't have to try.

So here's to the educators who showed up this weekend to invest in themselves first. That's not selfish. That's the whole strategy.

Want in on the next Circle? We are having a virtual Educator Wellbeing Circle this Thursday. Comment CIRCLE and we'll get you the details.

You don't have time for one more thing. I know.

I'm not going to pretend otherwise. You're already carrying more than any one person should. Your to-do list doesn't end, your inbox doesn't empty, and somewhere in the middle of all of it, you're still trying to show up fully for the kids in front of you.

So when someone says "come to this thing," I understand why your first instinct is to say no. You don't have the bandwidth. You're running on fumes.

But here's what I need you to hear: this isn't one more thing. This is the thing that makes everything else sustainable.

The CIRCLE on August 16th and 20th is two hours. That's it. Two hours where you're not giving β€” you're receiving. Where someone is finally asking about you. Where you leave with something real: a tool, a shift, a breath you didn't know you were holding.

You don't have time not to come.

Comment CIRCLE below and I'll send you your free spot.

Every school has values.

Respect. Community. Excellence. Growth.

They're on the website. They're in the handbook. Someone probably put them on a banner in the gymnasium.

But here's what I've seen happen in building after building: the values stay on the wall while the actual culture moves in a completely different direction. And nobody says it out loud, because everyone is hoping the other person is going to bring it up first.

Values alignment is not what you declare. It's what you do on the days it's hard to do it. It's how you treat a parent who is furious. How you respond to an educator who is failing. How you make decisions when resources are tight and everyone is watching.

On purpose is the operative phrase. Not accidentally, not occasionally, not when it's easy.

Living your values on purpose means returning to them, over and over, as a real and honest measure of who your school is becoming.

That's the work. And it's worth every bit of it.

Trust is not a feeling. It's a decision made over and over again.

It's the decision to tell your principal something is hard before it becomes a crisis. It's the decision to give a colleague the benefit of the doubt when their behavior is confusing. It's the decision to say what you mean in a staff meeting instead of saying it in the parking lot afterward.

And when that decision keeps getting punished β€” when honesty creates more problems than it solves, when vulnerability is used against you, when effort goes unacknowledged β€” people stop making it.

That's when a school starts running on performance instead of presence. Everyone looking okay on the surface. Nobody actually okay.

Trust is the backbone of every relationship in your building. And it doesn't rebuild itself. It rebuilds through consistent, repeated, intentional choice β€” from leadership, from teams, from every direction.

It starts with someone deciding to go first.

That might be you.

Most schools don't have a culture problem.

They have a clarity problem.

Nobody sat down and decided: we want this to be a place where educators feel safe to say they're struggling. Where conflict gets named instead of avoided. Where trust is something we actively build, not something we assume we have.

Nobody decided that, so it didn't happen.

What happened instead is default culture β€” the patterns, habits, and norms that form on their own when no one is steering. Sometimes default culture is okay. Sometimes it's the reason your staff turnover is climbing and nobody can tell you exactly why.

Design vs. default. That's the choice in front of every leader right now.

You don't need a perfect plan. You need a vision. A picture of what you want your school to feel like on an ordinary Tuesday in February when nobody's watching and nothing is going particularly well.

What does that look like for you?

That's where we start.

You cannot mandate what matters.

You can mandate attendance. You can mandate test prep. You can mandate lesson plan formats and data meetings and professional development hours. You can create a culture so focused on compliance and accountability that every educator in your building knows exactly what's being tracked.

And you can still lose your best people.

Not because they weren't capable. Because they stopped feeling like humans who were seen, valued, and trusted β€” and started feeling like data points who were monitored, measured, and managed.

The schools that are actually thriving right now aren't the ones with the most rigorous accountability systems. They're the ones where educators feel like their humanity is part of the work, not a liability to be managed around it.

Think beyond the data. Think beyond the test scores. Think about who your people are becoming inside your building every day.

That's the culture worth building.

Your school's culture is not your logo.

It's not the quote painted on the wall near the front office. It's not the professional development theme from last August or the values listed in the staff handbook that nobody opens.

Your culture is what actually happens when a teacher has a hard day and walks into the building. It's how your team talks to each other when leadership isn't in the room. It's what a brand-new educator feels in their first week and what a burned-out veteran feels in their fifteenth year.

Everything you think, say, and do reflects who you are and what you stand for. Every single day. Whether it's intentional or not.

That's the thing about culture β€” it's always happening. The question is whether you're designing it or defaulting to it.

This school year, we're choosing design.

Over the next seven days, we're walking through the seven principles that form the foundation of a thriving, extraordinary place to work. Not theory. Not a checklist. A real framework for building the culture your students, your educators, and your community deserve.

Welcome to Culture On Purpose.
