Earlier this month at BC CDI Tradeshow 2026, a group of door professionals spent three days in the room with Merlin Theurer, Roman Troyer, and Mark Daus- working through the material and sitting for the exam on day three.
The real thing. In person. With instructors who've done the work.
If you've been thinking about pursuing IDEA certification, this is how it gets done. The next opportunity is closer than you think. Comment EVENTS for a link to browse upcoming testing events!
PS- we love the faculty mascots they created for us 😄

🔔 Share this to your page so potential customers know what to look for when hiring a door technician
Before you hire anyone to work on your garage door, ask one question:
"Are you certified for this type of door system?"
Not licensed; certified (by an independent organization that tested them on the actual system they're installing).
Most people don't know to ask. Now you do!

Nobody gets into this trade for the glory.
You get into it because you're good with your hands, you like solving problems, and there's something satisfying about a door that works right. But the best techs in this industry aren't just good with their hands; they're trained to a standard. They know why every component matters.
That's the kind of professional IDEA exists to recognize. Is that you?

Most door and access companies reach a point where "got it done" stops being enough.
The callbacks start adding up. A tech swaps a part and two weeks later the same door calls again. A job passes inspection but something still doesn't seem right.
That's usually when the best operators start investing in training and certification- not because someone told them to, but because their own standard of work required it.
Our certification and dealer accreditation exist for exactly that moment. When you're ready to put a verified standard behind the work your team is already doing, look into these.

Meet Milt Prosperi- IDEA Treasurer, Director of Engineering at CornellCookson, Rolling Door Division Chair for DASMA, and someone who almost didn't take the interview that changed his life.
Milt entered the door industry reluctantly, after agreeing to an interview he didn't want to go to. The company president's passion for the rolling door industry's long-term potential changed his mind fast. Forty years later, he holds several patents, has worked every corner of this industry (sales, service, field installations, and product design) and looks forward to contributing to the work IDEA is doing.
What's he most proud of? The 18 years he spent owning and operating his own door company.
"Over those 18 years of business, we reported zero accidents/injuries and never went back on a job due to workmanship. I'm beyond proud of that!"
And his take on IDEA?
"Had they been around all those years ago, it would have made my life so much easier. While I gained so much by trial and error, it would have been a blessing to have at my disposal the knowledge and resources that IDEA provides. Priceless!"
His advice to anyone new to the trade:
"Understand the value of this industry and get certified. If you stick it out and truly give the industry a chance, it will reward you."
When he's not engineering doors, you'll find Milt at the bowling alley, on the softball field, or working through a jigsaw or crossword puzzle.

The person who shows up to work on your garage door or gate knows things about that system that you don't. That's not a criticism- it's just how specialized this work is. And it's exactly why their credentials matter! 🎖️
An IDEA certified garage door technician has been tested on how these systems work, the safety devices involved, and the standards that determine whether a door is operating safely; not just operating. Certification is how that knowledge gets verified.
When you're choosing who to call, ask if your technician is IDEA certified or if the company is an IDEA-accredited dealer. It's gives you a straight answer about whether they're being held to an industry standard, or just say they can do the job.

New to the door and access trade? Here's what the path forward actually looks like.
Most people start the same way; riding along, learning on the job, picking things up as they go. That's a real and valuable part of this trade. But at some point, the techs who move fastest are usually the ones who added extended learning and certification to that experience.
1️⃣ Start with the basics. The Residential Installer and Commercial Sectional Door Systems certifications give you a foundation that matches what you're already seeing in the field, but fills in the reasoning behind what you're doing.
2️⃣ Build toward the Master Tech (Automated Access Systems). The Master Technician path covers Residential, Commercial Sectional, Commercial Rolling, and Rolling Fire Door systems. You don't have to do it all at once, most techs stack certifications over time as their work evolves.
3️⃣ Add access and gate systems when you're ready. The Automated Gate Systems track takes you from Operator Installer through Gate Systems Technician Levels 1, 2, and 3- a clear path if gates are becoming part of your day-to-day.

Shout‑out to every IDEA‑accredited door dealer out there! 👏🏼
Accreditation doesn't happen by accident.
It means your company made a deliberate choice to meet documented standards around training, safety, and systems knowledge; and you're making a commitment to keep meeting them. That's not the easy path, and it doesn't go unnoticed!
If your company is IDEA‑accredited, drop your name in the comments. Let's show the industry what that commitment looks like!

We lost one of the best this week. Phillip Doyle- Gate Master Technician, forty years in the field, and one of the driving forces behind the Gate Systems Technician Certification program.
Tom DeSilvia said it best:
"Phillip wanted to stay and participate in the Coalition on his own, pay his own expenses, and not represent anyone but the industry he loved.
He coined the term RTFM (Read The Full Manual) and used it in every study guide he helped develop and every training class he administered. He had a sense of humor, was kind, and had a passion about the gate industry like no other.
He will be missed, remembered, and honored forever.
