Gujiya are crescent shaped filled pastry that are deep fried. The traditional gujiya recipe has a filling of sweeetned khoya or mawa (milk solids), cardamom and some nuts. These delish fried pastries resembles the Mexican empanadas. These mawa gujiya’s are the perfect festive treat, the addition of coconut makes them so special!
Gujiya is mostly prepared during festivals of color, Holi which is today. Happy Holi to everyone and enjoy making these delicious dessert at home for your friends & family.
It is known by different names like ghughra, karanji etc. across different states in India. The main filling for gujiya is mawa/khoya. People make gujiya in several ways. Some shape it by hand, some soak gujiya in a sugar syrup once fried, so it depends on the type of gujiya that you like at your home. My version of gujiya is fried then soaked in sugar syrup and garnished with sliver leaf (vark)and saffron.
