We had the pleasure and honor of attending "Karambit Unleashed 8" at Around the World Martial Arts" (Faith Hughes' dojang in Gardendale, AL) this past weekend! It was wonderful seeing our mentors, G**o Leon Slappey, G**o Stanley Tippins and Tuhon Ray Dionaldo! We also got to meet and touch hands with Doug Marcaida, Marrese Crump, Eric Moore, Tim Snead, and many more very talented, very humble martial artists. I've already begun bringing the lessons from the seminar back onto our mat and translating them into drills and ideas!

Deep gratitude and love,
Frankie Canant II

Gilbran Torres, thank you for this post.

In Aikido, Judo and Traditional Jujutsu, the most important movement often happens before the hands even touch to establish connection. This is “Tai-sabaki”—the art of body movement and evasion. It is the ability to turn, pivot, and shift your weight so that your opponent’s force passes harmlessly by you. A master of Tai-sabaki is like a ghost; they are never where the attack is landing, yet they are always in the perfect position to launch their own counter. It is the ultimate expression of efficiency in motion.

Tai-sabaki is about more than just avoiding a throw; it is about creating the angle that makes the throw possible. It teaches us that in any conflict, the key to victory is not to resist the pressure, but to move around it. By mastering your own movement, you gain control over the entire situation. It is a reminder that in life, as on the mat, the one who can adapt and move with the most grace is the one who will ultimately prevail.

“The one who moves the most intelligently, wins.” — Traditional Dojo Wisdom

Which technique do you think requires the most precise Tai-sabaki to execute perfectly?
