Good people of Van, we need your input.

The time has come to talk about e-bikes and safety. This summer, the number of e-bikes running around town has really jumped up and there have been a few incidents and a whole lot of near-misses. We initially tried the tact of “let’s let kids be kids” and “their parents will take care of it”, but that’s just not working.

The Texas Transportation Code defines e-bikes, you can see the breakdowns in the link below.. Anything without pedals or that goes over 28 MPH is not an e-bike and requires a license to operate on public roads. E-bikes, as defined, are in the same category as bicycles, and are supposed to follow traffic laws. Unfortunately, we are seeing a proliferation of very small people on very large e-bikes running stop signs in front of traffic, tearing up the baseball fields, riding through the veteran’s memorial, and even colliding with children. The number of verbal complaints has now been joined by written concerns for the safety of our local youth.

We’ve reached out to surrounding towns to get examples of how they will deal with this same issue, but it’s not a “one size fit all” situation. The council will discuss this at the next regular council meeting on August 13th and decide IF there is a need for any type of ordinance or regulation, and if so what kind. Between now and then, please reach out to your council and give us your input on any concerns or ideas you have, and then come to the meeting to hear and participate in the discussion. An email or phone call will be far more meaningful that a Facebook comment that might be lost in the shuffle. Please reach out.

You can find the council contact info on the city website or use the link below.
