October is AAC Awareness Month!
On October 1, 2026, Van Vleck Elementary Special Education Classroom hosted an AAC Awareness Month kickoff celebrating communication, collaboration, and the exciting ways AAC is being incorporated into learning across VVISD!
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and includes tools and strategies that help individuals communicate. AAC can include pictures, communication boards, signs, gestures, and speech-generating devices β often called βtalkers.β These tools give students more ways to express their thoughts, wants, needs, ideas, and personalities!
Gulf Coast Special Education Speech-Language Pathologists Courtney Romine and Amanda McKnight were excited to welcome Hannah Herring, Tobii Dynavox Solutions Consultant for the Greater Houston Area, and Brittany Kraft, Boardmaker Account Manager, to Van Vleck Elementary.
The collaborative event showcased how VVISD is using AAC and interactive Boardmaker activities to support students as they communicate, participate, learn, and grow. Staff from across the district joined the event, including the Van Vleck Junior High & High School Special Education Teacher and Van Vleck High School Principal, providing an opportunity to collaborate across campuses and support students as they continue their educational journey.
Special thanks to Gulf Coast Special Education for donating AAC shirts to staff members who attended AAC implementation training provided by the Speech-Language Pathologists this past summer.
We are excited to continue building a school community where every student has a voice and every form of communication is valued!
