Dear School Year 2026-2027,

Please be kind to our children.

Please be gentle on their hearts and patient with their struggles.

Please remind them that they matter, they are worthy, and they belong.

Please ease their worry and anxiety, and strengthen their confidence and independence.

Please help them nurture a love of learning, or discover it in a new way.

Please let them find teachers and coaches and administrators who cheer them on.

Please guide them to friends with whom they can be their authentic, best selves.

Please give them access to the right resources so that each of them can succeed.

Please don’t let them ever forget how unconditionally loved they are.

Please keep them safe.

Please let them come home.

And please protect the heart of every mother learning to let go,

One school year at a time.

ELEVENTH GRADE,
this is the year where it all starts
to feel real.

College talk. Career paths.
The “what’s next” questions.

But under all of it… they’re still my kid.
Still the same little human who needed me to hold their hand crossing the street.

And now?
They’re learning to drive. Filling out forms.
Getting mail with their name on it.
And I’m sitting here wondering where the years went.

Please don’t forget
just because they’re closer to grown doesn’t mean they’re ready for everything.

They still need kindness.
Encouragement.
A safe place to land.

This isn’t just another school year.
It’s one of the last ones.
Please make it count.

EIGHTH GRADE,
please give them grace.

They’re not little kids anymore
but they’re also not as grown as they pretend to be.

This is the year of big feelings
behind quiet stares.

Of pushing people away while silently hoping someone stays.

Of wanting independence,
but still needing support.

They’re watching how you handle their awkward, their moody, their unsure.

They may not say it…
but they still need you to see them.

To believe in them.
To meet them with patience, not pressure.

Eighth grade is complicated.
But they’re still soft underneath it all.
Please don’t forget that.
