2017 PEP Literacy Workshop 10/19/2017

Special thanks to literacy experts Jan Burkins and Kim Yaris for presenting "Who's Doing the Work? How to Say Less So Readers Can Do More" at the PEP's 2017 Literacy Workshop on October 10th. Thanks also to the 268 professional educators and VU students that attended the event.

Many attendees indicated they left the workshop with a better understanding of how to support their students to develop as efficient readers. A classroom teacher commented "At today's workshop I learned about having a balance between read alouds, shared reading, guided reading and independent reading and the importance of each." Another teacher said the most significant thing she learned was "perspective from a struggling readers standpoint."

It's your last chance to register for the PEP's 2017 Literacy Workshop!

Considering the ways read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading are connected, we will explore “next generation” thinking for each instructional context. We will make connections to student engagement, text level, mindset, and teacher language, considering when they do (and do not) help students develop efficient reading processes and enthusiasm for reading. This workshop teaches teachers to examine their instruction and identify places where they are doing the work for students, creating dependency and interfering with student growth. Come learn simple adjustments to instruction that can lead to powerful shifts in student engagement, empowering students to the work of becoming better readers and raising student achievement.
