Of course Penn State won a national weather forecasting competition.

They practice in Pennsylvania. In July 2026, Penn State meteorology students won the national WxChallenge, a college forecasting competition where students predict temperatures, wind and precipitation for cities across the country.

The forecasts are scored against what actually happens, which is basically weather’s way of grading your homework after changing the answers overnight.

The win is another big moment for Penn State meteorology and Pennsylvania weather science. Forecasting is tough anywhere, but students in PA get plenty of practice with heat, humidity, thunderstorms, snow, lake-effect weather and those random days when all four seasons seem to show up before dinner.

Turns out growing up around Pennsylvania weather might actually be useful for something.
