The variable appears
on both sides.

Before calculating, ask:

What relationship do you notice
between the two expressions?

Can you justify
your first step?

Answer: x = −5

This is a good opportunity to incorporate the questioning we just discussed. The student should not merely produce -5;
we want them prepared to explain the reasoning that produced it.

MATH FACT

0 × any number = 0

Why?

Multiplication can represent
equal groups.

If there are zero groups,
there are no quantities to combine.

So,

0 × 25 = 0

And:

25 × 0 = 0

Any number multiplied by zero
has a product of zero.

I like including both 0\times25 and 25\times0. It prevents the explanation from being attached only to zero as the first factor.

The percentage describes
the change from the original price.

This one is good.
I only added “The increase is $10” to distinguish the amount of change from the new price.

The terms have the same variable.

So their coefficients combine:

2x + 5x = 7x

When adding like terms,
the coefficients combine.

The variable and its exponent
remain the same.

I prefer this last wording. “Not their exponents” could accidentally imply that something should be done with the exponents.

Notice the relationship:

25 × 4 = 100
36 ÷ 4 = 9

One factor is multiplied by 4.

The other factor is divided by 4.
The product remains unchanged.

So:

25 × 36 = 100 × 9

Answer: 900

Recognizing structure can make a calculation more efficient.

Fractions can make an equation look complicated.
But underneath the fractions is a relationship we can uncover.

What could you do first to remove the denominators?

Solve the equation.

Then verify your answer in the original equation.
Answer: x = −16

When I work with a student,
I am paying attention to more

I notice the pause before an answer.
The “I do not know” that comes before
they have really thought about the question.

The answer spoken like a question
because they are unsure of themselves.

The relief when they realize
they DID know something.
These things matter.

Learning is not only about
what a student knows.
It is also about what happens
while they are trying to use
what they know.
