Can you find 35² without long multiplication?

Notice: 35²

The answer ends in 25.

Take the 3 and multiply it by the next integer:

3 × 4 = 12

Then place 25 after 12.

35² = 1225

This works for numbers ending in 5.

Calling it a pattern fits your teaching
much better than calling it a trick.

You want students asking why it works,
not simply collecting shortcuts.

look at the structure.

What can you do first?

Answer: x = 3 or x = −3

This one is particularly good because students can recognize that dividing by 2 gives x² − 9 = 0,

which connects naturally to difference of squares—or they can arrive at x² = 9.

There are relationships to notice.

One of the hardest and most beautiful parts of teaching a child is realizing that the learning eventually belongs to them.

We introduce.
We explain.
We encourage.
We expose them to possibilities.

But eventually, they begin making their own decisions.
Tomorrow, I will watch my daughter graduate in a field

The sum of three consecutive integers
is always divisible by 3.

For example:

14 + 15 + 16 = 45

Why?

The middle number is the average of the three numbers, so their sum is 3 times the middle number.

The why is important here. Otherwise, it becomes another fact to memorize.
