The mission of the student chapter is to "examine issues relating to the contemporary professional lives of student musicians and future educators."

The mission statement is broad, and it allows students the opportunity to develop forums, seminars, workshops, and panels on topics of importance to their professional lives. A collegiate chapter allows students the chance to be involved immediately in important professional considerations and both undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to have their voice heard. CMS Webinar March 15, 2019 (Johnson) 04/17/2019

In this webinar participants will likely experience paradigm shifts in how they conceive of and experience their own bodies. We will consider “tensegrity,” an excellent model for understanding our physical structure as an integrated whole. We will examine common misconceptions or “mis-mappings,” that can lead to inefficient motion, and ultimately chronic pain and injuries. The role of balance in patterns of tension and integrated motion will be discussed. Elements of our arm structure will be presented as they relate instrument specific issues.

The Role of Collegiate Faculty and Administrators in Addressing Musicians' Health 04/17/2019

Contemplative pedagogy is a powerful multidisciplinary movement in higher education teaching, research, service, and administration. This largely holistic philosophy of education incorporates mindful awareness to encourage deep reflection, creative inquiry, and imaginative problem solving. When students learn to integrate techniques of contemplation in the practice room and on stage, they are better equipped to become healthy, artistic, independent musicians. Similarly, studio and ensemble instructors can improve their own self-awareness when listening, offering feedback, and handling interpersonal conflicts. This webinar explores the current research on mindfulness practice and offers practical techniques for incorporating mindfulness into teaching and music making, with an emphasis on injury prevention and stress and anxiety management.

He explains how both student and teacher can recognize the signs and manage playing-related problems and provides preventive strategies designed to preserve a budding musical career.
