Dear DC West Middle School Families,
Starting next week our students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade will take the Fall MAP Growth assessments in English Language Arts and Math. MAP Growth is a short, computer-based test that helps our teachers understand what each student already knows and what they are ready to learn next. It is not a pass-or-fail test. It simply gives us a starting point so we can support your child's growth all year long.

When Will Students Test?

MAP Growth — ELA August 25-27 6th, 7th, 8th
MAP Growth — Math September 1-3 6th, 7th, 8th
*Testing takes place during regular class periods on student iPads.

How You Can Help at Home

-Get a good night's rest. A full night of sleep helps students focus and think clearly. Try to keep bedtimes consistent during testing week.
-Eat a good breakfast. A healthy breakfast gives your child the energy to stay sharp through the whole test.
-Arrive on time. Being at school and settled before the bell means your child can start calm and unrushed.
-Encourage a calm, positive mindset. Remind your child that MAP is just a way to show what they know. There is no need to worry.
-Encourage them to do their best. Ask your child to read carefully, take their time, and try their best on every question.

Most of all, remind your child of this: “Just relax and do your best.” That mindset matters far more than any single score.

What better way to start the year than by getting creative and getting to know one another?

Our Falcons jumped into some fun “getting to know you” activities in Art class, giving students a chance to share their personalities, interests, and creativity while building connections with classmates.

It’s more than just making art—it’s about creating a classroom where students feel seen, valued, and connected. ❤️🖤

From Lunch Time Solutions:

Our school menus are now available through the My School Menus app. The app allows you to filter menu items by your child's food allergies, so you can identify options that may be safe for them.

Please note: When an item appears with a line through it, this means the item contains the allergen you selected and is not safe for your child.

When we receive a new brand or version of a food item, our Food Service Department reviews the product information for allergens. Because ingredients and manufacturing practices can change, families should continue to review the menu and allergy information regularly.

When there is an entree that has a single item that is not baked into the meal that could be removed, we can work with having serving of the entree set aside for her to enjoy.

What better way to kick off the school year than with a little fun, a lot of energy, and an entire gym full of DC West Falcon spirit!

Our Welcome Back Assembly was filled with laughter, music, competitions, and some BIG school spirit. Most importantly, it was a chance to remind our students that they belong, they matter, and we are so glad they are here.

We are so excited to welcome the newest members of the Falcon family! 🦅❤️

Today, we had the privilege of welcoming new staff to DC West Community Schools as they begin an exciting new chapter. A heartfelt thank you to Kelsey Nabity for creating an outstanding induction program and coordinating a warm, organized, and engaging experience for our newest Falcons.

From building connections to learning what it means to be a Falcon, today was all about making staff feel welcomed, supported, and excited for the year ahead.

We can’t wait to see all they accomplish in 2026-2027!
