BOOKBAG SAFETY

It’s time to show off those new bookbags! Bright and shiny, cool colors, awesome graphics!

They show off your student’s style and they are incredibly handy! But bookbags can also strain muscles and cause back pain if they are too heavy or not worn correctly.

The weight can pull the child backwards, making them bend forward to balance the weight, causing back, hip and neck pain. If they wear it on one shoulder, they bend toward the other side to keep their balance, causing strain on their shoulders, neck and back. So, an improperly fitting bookbag can result in poor posture and life-long health and postural issues.

Kids can develop back pain from lugging around the weight of books, school supplies and personal items. Doctors recommend that kids carry no more than 10% of their body weight in their packs. For example, if your child weighs 80 pounds, their filled bookbag should weigh no more than 8 pounds. The math is easy!

Guide for the perfect bookbag:

1. Find a light-weight bookbag.
2. Two wide shoulder straps that do not dig into their shoulders.
3. Multiple compartments to help distribute the weight.
4. Does it have a waist strap? Even better! That can help carry the load!
5. Empty your child’s bookbag regularly and discard items that are no longer needed.
6. Tighten the shoulder straps so that bookbag fits close to your child’s back.
