Valley Stream Union Free School District 24 is a unique elementary school district. Our 1,069 students are in Kindergarten through grade 6. There are 348 students at Brooklyn Avenue School, 325 students at William L. Buck School, and 396 students at Robert W. Carbonaro School. Upon completion of the sixth grade, our students continue their education in the junior and senior high schools of the Valley Stream Central High School District.

VALLEY STREAM 24 SCHOOL DISTRICT’S NEWEST BOARD OF EDUCATION TRUSTEES ARE HONORED AT ANNUAL SCOPE DINNER

The newest members of the Valley Stream 24 School District Board of Education were honored at SCOPE’s 41st Annual Dinner Meeting for Superintendents and School Board Members, held August 11 at Bourne Mansion. Board Vice President Aisha Darby, Trustee Thomas Dowling and Trustee Salman Quader were formally recognized alongside fellow new trustees from school districts throughout the region. The evening also featured the participation of distinguished educational leaders, including New York State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa and Long Island Board of Regents Representative Felicia Thomas-Williams. The district congratulates Vice President Darby, Trustee Dowling and Trustee Quader on this well-deserved recognition and thanks SCOPE for bringing together educational leaders from across Long Island to honor their service and commitment to students and school communities!

BROOKLYN AVENUE SCHOOL FAMILIES ENJOY THIRD ANNUAL PTA FAMILY FUN DAY AT CITI FIELD

Students at Brooklyn Avenue School in the Valley Stream 24 School District recently enjoyed the third annual Family Fun Day at Citi Field, hosted by the Brooklyn Avenue School Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The event brought together about 150 students and their families for an afternoon of baseball, community, and family fun as the New York Mets took on the Philadelphia Phillies.

VALLEY STREAM 24 SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION HOLDS ANNUAL REORGANIZATION MEETING

The Valley Stream 24 School District Board of Education recently held its annual reorganization meeting at which it swore in its members and welcomed the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. Newly elected members Aisha Darby, Thomas Dowling, and Salman Quader were sworn in for their first year on the Board. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Unal Karakas took the oath of office for the new year. The Board elected Annette Matthew to serve as Board President and Aisha Darby to serve as Vice President for the upcoming school year.

The Valley Stream 24 School District recently celebrated its pre-kindergarten students at a joyous moving up ceremony. Students walked across the stage and performed a song for their families as they looked to transition into Valley Stream 24 schools. Thank you to Mrs. Lorraine Peters and the entire team at Our Kids Place for preparing our district’s future Kindergarten students.

VALLEY STREAM 24 SCHOOL DISTRICTS CONGRATULATES ITS 2026 GRADUATING CLASS

Valley Stream Union Free School District 24 proudly celebrated the achievements of its 2026 graduating classes during commencement ceremonies held this June for students from Robert W. Carbonaro School, William L. Buck School and Brooklyn Avenue School. Hosted in the William L. Buck School auditorium, each ceremony marked an important milestone as students concluded their elementary school experience and prepared to begin the next chapter of their educational journey. Graduates were recognized for their hard work, perseverance and personal growth throughout their years in the district as they proudly crossed the stage to receive their diplomas.

BROOKLYN AVENUE SCHOOL STUDENTS PUT THEIR ENGINEERING SKILLS TO THE TEST

Brooklyn Avenue School’s fourth-grade students recently sharpened their STEM skills during an engaging engineering challenge led by Library Media Specialist Cheryl Calamiong. Working in teams, students were tasked with designing and constructing weather-resistant shelters using a limited set of provided materials. After planning, building and problem-solving together, the young engineers tested their creations under simulated precipitation conditions to determine how effectively their shelters could withstand the elements. Students enthusiastically applied concepts of design, teamwork and scientific inquiry while experiencing the engineering design process firsthand. The hands-on activity fostered creativity, critical thinking and resilience as it brought STEM learning to life in an exciting and memorable way.

BROOKLYN AVENUE SCHOOL EXPLORES THE SOLAR SYSTEM DURING PTA-SPONSORED PLANETARIUM EXPERIENCE

Students at Brooklyn Avenue School in the Valley Stream 24 School District recently experienced the wonders of our solar system through an immersive Planetarium presentation sponsored by the school’s PTA. The engaging event provided students with an interactive journey through space, helping them deepen their understanding of planets, stars and the broader universe. Experiences like this bring learning to life and inspire students to think critically and develop a love for science. The district is grateful to our BAS PTA for providing this enriching opportunity and helping create memorable educational experiences for our students. The district thanks everyone who helped make this event an "out-of-this-world" experience for all involved!
