We agree with this 100%
Most parents are told:
“Just connect first.”
But no one talks about the moment it breaks.
It usually looks like this:
You stay calm.
You explain.
You try to help.
…then they escalate anyway.
So you add more words.
More reasoning.
More explaining.
And that’s the point it shifts.
Because when a child is overwhelmed,
their brain isn’t processing language the way you think it is.
More input doesn’t create connection.
It creates pressure.
Connection isn’t about saying the right thing.
It’s about matching their nervous system.
Sometimes that means:
→ fewer words
→ more presence
→ helping their body feel safe again
If connection “isn’t working,”
it’s usually not because you’re doing it wrong—
it’s because the timing is off.
And timing changes everything.
→ This is the piece most parents are missing—and why strategies fall flat.
