In addition to owning and operating the US Open, Emirates Airlines US Open Series and selecting the members of the Davis Cup, Fed Cup

and Olympic teams, the USTA administers a variety of programs nationwide for players of all ages and ability levels. Incorporated in 1924, the USTA Middle States (USTA MS) section encompasses Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey (exclusive of a 35-mile radius around New York City) and northwestern West Virginia. USTA MS is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to carrying out the goals of the national association within its region, particularly with respect to promoting tennis opportunities for juniors and adults of all abilities and all cultural backgrounds. To better service local needs, USTA MS is further subdivided into six districts: Allegheny Mountain, Central PA, Delaware, Eastern PA, New Jersey and Philadelphia. The USTA MS Board of Directors provides the strategic direction and leadership for the section. By evaluating and establishing goals, policies and objectives the Board provides the road map from which the professional staff, headed by the executive director, and other volunteers follow to achieve the mission – To promote and develop the growth of tennis.

Kyle Hejmowski (pictured in green) is helping introduce a new generation of students to tennis at Archangel Gabriel Catholic School.

Inspired by Billie Jean King and the free tennis program he participated in as a child, Hejmowski started a tennis club that gives students in first through fifth grade an accessible and welcoming setting to learn the game.

With support from USTA Middle States, the program received racquets, mini nets, tennis balls and a $500 grant to help bring the club to life. After running weekly sessions last spring, Hejmowski is already looking ahead to expanding the program and bringing it back next year.

A new chapter for Blind and Low Vision tennis in the United States. 🎾 The inaugural National Blind Tennis Tournament in Pittsburgh, PA, brought athletes together to compete, connect and celebrate the continued growth of the sport. 📸 Scenes from an action-packed week at the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge!

Despite the extreme heat and rain, it was a fantastic week of professional tennis and community events, including USTA Middle States’ annual Kids Day and the CPD Awards Ceremony Celebration. 🎾

Kids Day brought children ages 12 and under together for a free day of on-court games, drills, while the awards ceremony celebrated local community tennis advocates.

On the court, No. 1 seed Hanne Vandewinkel (BEL) captured the singles title with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 comeback victory over No. 2 seed Anastasia Zakharova.

In doubles, I-Hsuan Cho and Yi Tsen Cho (TPE) claimed the title with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Savannah Broadus and Kylie Collins (USA).

It is with heavy hearts that we join the tennis community in mourning the loss of James "Jim" F. Phipps, Jr., a beloved coach, mentor and leader whose impact on our sport will be felt for generations.

From his early days at the West Oak Lane Boys Club in Philadelphia to becoming one of the section’s most influential coaches, Jim dedicated his life to growing tennis.

His illustrious coaching career touched every level of the sport. He led Franklin & Marshall College to its first NCAA team appearance in 25 years, mentored multiple NCAA All-Americans at Millersville University, coached and taught P.E. at Lancaster Country Day School, and served for years as a USTA Middle States Zonal Coach and NJTL Director. He was inducted into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame in 2024 and the following year received the National Novo Nordisk Donnelly Award.

Jim will be remembered most for his generous heart and his legacy lives on through the thousands of lives he touched, the coaches he inspired and the communities he strengthened through tennis. He will be deeply missed both on and off the court.
