I've got a couple of exciting performances coming up! The first one is for all ages this Saturday, December 14th, at 7:30PM in Duerksen Fine Arts Center at Wichita State University. I'll be performing in the flute section of the Wichita Wind Symphony under conductor, Dr. Tim Shade.

The second is on December 27th at Walker's Jazz Lounge in Old Town for the 21+ crowd. There's a cover charge I believe. I'll be performing with David Lord, Miki Masuda Jarvis, Charles Rumbach and Craig Owens and the Bodo Ensemble. Hope you can make it out to one of these if you're free!

Many congrats to all flutists auditioning this weekend and the teachers and parents who support them.

I’m extra proud of Charlotte for earning First Chair in the 1,2,3,4A SCKMEA District Honor Band. ✨

Wonderful work! 🎶

I've been thinking a lot about creativity, stagnation, and navigating stress during the last few months. I recently started playing with Craig Owens' Bodo Ensemble in Wichita, and it's been quite a deep dive into the world of improvisation, free jazz, and (in many ways) insecurity.

It raises the question - how do I follow a musical idea through to its best conclusion *without* being able to practice it in advance. How do I trust and rely on my ears, instincts, and (hopefully) good taste in a genre that hasn't featured bass flute before?

And, deeper down, why haven't I challenged myself to try this sort of thing before? (Do I really *need* a group of other musicians to spur creative risk-taking? Maybe, yes!?!?)

If you haven't watched Now Hear This from Great Performances on PBS, I'm going to catch this week's episode (via the app on my Apple TV). It streams for free for a week or two. Scott Yoo, a classical musician and conductor is taking a stab at COMPOSING with some expert guidance. The preview looks great.
