to Lennon Prothero-Jones on becoming Cal Poly Maritime Academy’s new director of Cadet Leadership and Development! In his new role, he will lead the Office of Cadet Leadership and Development, provide strategic oversight of the Corps of Cadets, develop and strengthen cadet growth through leadership opportunities, hand-on educational programs and skill development.

This is the latest chapter of Prothero-Jones’ Cal Poly Maritime Academy career since he served in a variety of leadership roles as director of Housing and Residential Life, deputy dean of students and dean of students since he first joined the campus community in June of 2021.

In his new position, students will enjoy an enhanced undergraduate experience thanks to his broad experience in student development, residential education, crisis response and leadership programming. His collaborative approach and commitment to student success made him a trusted leader and advocate for cadets as they prepare for careers in the maritime industry and beyond.

Captain Anne McIntyre, an alum who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Cal Poly Maritime Academy, threw the ceremonial first pitch at a recent Cal Poly alumni event at Oracle Park, home of the San Francisco Giants.

Captain McIntyre represented both campuses and the San Francisco Bar Pilots — she currently serves as its business director — with her pregame appearance, one of numerous elements that took place during California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) Night when San Francisco hosted the Los Angeles Angels during a recent weekend series.

Today, Cal Poly Maritime Academy celebrates National Intern Day by recognizing the 176 students and cadets participating in experiential learning this summer, gaining real-world experience both offshore and onshore, around the globe and close to home.

These opportunities are made possible by embedding into our curriculum, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the commitment of more than 100 industry partners who invest in developing the next generation of maritime leaders through mentorship, hands-on learning and pathways to impactful careers.

⛵⛵⛵ Twelve days, 27 minutes and 54 seconds after it departed San Francisco, Oaxaca crossed the finish line in Hawaii to complete the Pacific Cup, for the first time in school history, to capture third place within its division!

Oaxaca was the only boat that included college athletes as part of its crew; the following students competed against the world's top professional teams:

Superintendent Rear Adm. Eric C. Jones (Ret.) is aboard USCGC Eagle as it sails from New York City to Boston for the Five Sisters’ Cup race and the July 11 Sail Boston Parade of Sail.

The Five Sisters’ Cup is named for Eagle and her four German-built sister cadet training ships. Four of the five sisters, Eagle of the United States, Sagres II of Portugal, Mircea of Romania and Gorch Fock II of Germany are participating in this historic race.

Jones previously served as commanding officer of Eagle, making this voyage a meaningful return to “America’s Tall Ship” and the ship that helped shape his distinguished maritime career.

In Boston, USS Constitution will lead the Parade of Sail, followed by USCGC Eagle and Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s schooner Ernestina-Morrissey. The National Security Multi-Mission Vessel Patriot State will serve as the reviewing stand for the parade.

It is an incredible opportunity to celebrate maritime heritage, cadet training and the enduring traditions that connect mariners around the world. 🇺🇸⚓

Cal Poly Maritime Academy's sailing team has crossed the starting line of the 2026 Pacific Cup, beginning the 2,070-nautical-mile offshore race from San Francisco Bay to Hawaiʻi aboard Oaxaca. The race is one of the world's premier ocean sailing competitions, testing seamanship, teamwork and endurance across the Pacific.

The cadets are led by Head Sailing Coach Kerry Deaver and supported by Rob Vandervort, Jacob Fisker-Anderson and Cyrus Khaleeli, with Fisker-Anderson and Khaleeli both proud Cal Maritime alumni.

Designed specifically for West Coast races to Hawaiʻi, OAXACA is a Santa Cruz 50, a 50-foot sloop built for speed, teamwork and offshore performance.

🌴 Learning doesn't stop when the ship reaches port.

During their time in Fiji, Cal Poly Maritime Academy cadets visited Vuisiga Village, where they experienced traditional Fijian culture through community activities, local customs, shared meals and conversations with residents. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the people of Vuisiga Village and Fiji for their warm hospitality and generosity in sharing their culture, traditions and way of life.

These experiences are an important part of Summer Sea Term, giving students the opportunity to build cultural awareness, strengthen global connections and gain a deeper understanding of the communities that make up the maritime world.

From navigating oceans to building relationships across cultures, cadets continue to learn what it means to be ready on day one.

🇫🇯 Bula from Fiji!

After weeks at sea crossing the Pacific Ocean, Cal Poly Maritime Academy cadets aboard Training Ship Golden Bear arrived in Suva, Fiji, one of the international ports visited during Summer Sea Term 2026.

The arrival was marked by a traditional sevusevu ceremony aboard Golden Bear, where cadets, crew and Cal Poly leaders were welcomed by local hosts and introduced to an important Fijian cultural tradition. The experience offered students a firsthand look at the customs, hospitality and values that have shaped Fiji for generations.

Summer Sea Term combines hands-on maritime training with opportunities to engage with communities around the world, helping cadets develop the global perspective and cultural awareness required of today's maritime professionals.
