Cal Poly Maritime Academy ⚓
The West Coast's only degree-granting maritime academy.

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located in Vallejo, California, the campus serves nearly 1,000 students and offers undergraduate degrees preparing students for careers in engineering, transportation, international relations, business, and global logistics. The new oceanography degree program launched in the fall of 2020. Cal Maritime also offers a master’s degree in Transportation and Engineering Management, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

, Nick Mueller, for finishing second at the PCCSC Open Singlehanded Championship! Eleven competitors from league institutions visited Seattle for this competition, but it quickly turned into a two-man race throughout the entire weekend.

Mueller won one race and finished second in five of the other six to remain in contention for the individual championship throughout the regatta.

⚓ Back in the boat!

For the first time in decades, Cal Poly Maritime Academy cadets competed in the George C. Previll Memorial Inter-Maritime Academy Monomoy Race at SUNY Maritime College in New York.

Cal Poly Maritime joined cadets and midshipmen from SUNY Maritime, Maine Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a day of competition that put teamwork, seamanship, strength and endurance to the test.

Congratulations to Maine Maritime Academy on taking first place, and to our Cal Poly Maritime cadets for bringing the academy back to this longstanding maritime tradition after a decades-long absence.

A great day of competition, camaraderie and maritime tradition. ⚓

Cal Poly Maritime Academy Sailing enjoyed the best possible start to its big boat season by capturing first place at this past weekend's Shield Cup. The team climbed to first after three races and held the top spot for the rest of the weekend, throughout this seven-race regatta.

Yesterday, Cal Poly Maritime Academy welcomed government, industry, labor and education leaders to the Solano Campus for a Maritime Summit hosted by U.S. Rep. John Garamendi.

The summit brought together leaders from government, industry, labor and education to discuss the future of America’s maritime industry and opportunities for growth here in California.

Participants included Stephen Carmel, administrator of the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD); Thomas “Jack” Moreau of U.S. Transportation Command; Rear Adm. Benjamin "Ben" Nicholson of Military Sealift Command; Rear Adm. Robert Compher of the U.S. Coast Guard; former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf of the Bay Area Council; state Sen. Tim Grayson; Assemblymember Lori D. Wilson; Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce; and Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong, who welcomed participants to the Solano Campus.

The conversations focused on strengthening America’s maritime industry, expanding the Bay Area’s maritime industrial capacity and preparing the next generation of maritime professionals.

This comes as Cal Poly recently received $5.8 million in California Jobs First funding to support maritime workforce and industry development in Solano County and the region.

Bringing education, government and industry together is critical to building the maritime workforce of the future, and Cal Poly Maritime Academy is helping lead the way.

When it mattered most, Cal Poly Maritime Academy cadet Zion Jerge stepped up. Today, we had the opportunity to recognize him for it. ⚓

Earlier this month, Jerge heard screams coming from a nearby apartment complex in Foster City and ran to help. He found two people in distress in a swimming pool and immediately took action. Jerge first rescued one person from the water, bringing them safely out of the pool. When he learned a second man was unconscious at the bottom of the pool, Jerge went back in, pulled him to the surface and immediately began CPR. A short time later, the man began breathing on his own.

For his immediate and effective action in preventing the loss of life, Superintendent Rear Adm. Eric Jones presented Jerge with the Cal Poly Maritime Academy Meritorious Service Ribbon.

Jerge also received a lifesaving commendation from the Foster City Police Department recognizing his actions that day.

Zion demonstrated courage, composure and a bias to action when others needed him most.

That’s leadership. That’s Ready Day One.

Congratulations, Zion. Well deserved.

Gov. Gavin Newsom visited Mare Island today, with Training Ship Golden Bear providing the backdrop for an announcement focused on California’s workforce and economic future. ⚓

Cal Poly Maritime Academy cadets were on hand for the event, joined by Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong and California State University Chancellor Mildred García.

It was a great opportunity to showcase our cadets, our campus and the important role maritime education and workforce development play in California’s future.

It was also a fitting recognition of Golden Bear’s 30 years of service to the Academy as the ship approaches the end of its remarkable tenure.
