White coats and a great NYMC community coming together to celebrate Women in Medicine Month!

School of Medicine faculty, medical students, and members of the NYMC community gathered today for a group photo celebrating the contributions of women in medicine and the many women who have helped shape the profession, those advancing it today, and the next generation of women physicians.

Thank you to everyone who joined us!

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, New York Medical College remembers alumnae Carmen Castro Suarez, M.D. ’49, left, and Marisa Castro, M.D. ’49, right, two sisters from San Juan, Puerto Rico. On June 8, 1949, they graduated together from NYMC, marking a historic milestone, not only for their family, but for Latin representation in medicine.

The sisters returned to Puerto Rico for their internships: Dr. Marisa Castro at Arecibo District Hospital, and Dr. Carmen Castro Suarez at Municipal City Hospital in San Juan, alongside her husband and fellow College alumnus, José F. Suárez, M.D. ’49. Throughout their careers, the Castro sisters remained committed to public service and community care.

As we mark 25 years since September 11, 2001, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, and honor the first responders, health care professionals, service members, and many others who answered the call that day.

On the campus, Lt. Col. Debjeet Sarkar, M.D. ’05, together with NYMC's Dr. William Frishman, dedicated a tree and commemorative plaque on behalf of the School of Medicine Class of 2005, “in honor and loving memory of those killed on 9/11/2001.”

The dedication ceremony also commemorated the NYMC community who responded: nearly 300 medical students and residents serving at hospitals and at Ground Zero. Their courage and compassion remain an enduring part of NYMC’s history, and a reminder of medicine’s commitment to serve when it matters most.
