Leonardo Sens spent three years waiting for the moon to align perfectly with Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.

He studied the moon’s position using astronomy apps and invested in a powerful 600mm lens to capture the precise alignment. His first attempt in 2021 did not work, and cloudy weather prevented the shot in 2022.

Then, on June 4, 2023, Sens returned to Icaraí Beach in Niterói, about seven miles from the statue. He arrived early, prepared his equipment and waited for the moon to reach exactly the right position.

At 6:28 in the morning, he finally captured it.

The resulting photograph makes it appear as though Christ the Redeemer is holding the glowing moon between His outstretched hands.

Three years of preparation came down to a single frame.

Sometimes the perfect picture is not about being in the right place by accident. It is about knowing what you are waiting for, preparing for it and refusing to give up when the first attempt does not work.
