Today, our chorus students rotated through two LEGO-themed learning stations designed to build their musical skills, strengthen collaboration, and encourage creativity!

🧱 Station 1: LEGO Rhythm Builder
Students used LEGO bricks to represent different rhythms and completed a series of composition challenges using simple and compound meter. Once their rhythms were built, students exchanged creations with their classmates and performed one another’s compositions using the Takadimi system.

🎼 Station 2: Create, Collaborate, Curate
Students completed a LEGO-themed song analysis based on one of the pieces from our upcoming Winter Concert. Students researched translations of foreign-language lyrics, identified their strengths and areas for growth within the music, collaborated with classmates, and shared their personal perspectives on the repertoire.

🧱 Why LEGO?
Today’s LEGO theme was inspired by the Lowndes County Schools “Made Here, Built Here” theme. Just like building with LEGO bricks, musicians build their skills one piece at a time. Each individual contribution helps us create something stronger together.

We are incredibly grateful to the United Way of Valdosta Teacher Appreciation Grant (2025–2026) and the Peter R. Marsh Middle School Music Grant for their support of our chorus program. Because of these generous contributions, we were able to purchase a class set of Manhasset music stands.

These stands will allow our students to rehearse while standing, promoting better posture, healthier vocal technique, and greater freedom of movement without the distraction of holding sheet music.

Today in 6th and 7th grade chorus, students took composition into their own hands. Using Velcro strips on the floor to represent the lines and spaces of the musical staff, they built their own tonal patterns from the ground up. Square Velcro marked DO, while circle dots became note heads.

Once their patterns were complete, the real challenge began. Students had to accurately sing what they created before moving on. Hands-on learning, creativity, and musicianship all in one class period.

Today, our chorus students reviewed the importance of unified vowels in choral singing during our Marshmallow Lab! 🎶☁️

Students explored the five pure singing vowels, demonstrating their understanding of vowel shape, open vs. closed distinctions, and vowel position using mini, regular, and jumbo marshmallows. They put their knowledge into practice while having a little fun along the way!

And, of course, at the end of the lab, students got to enjoy their sweet treats! 🍡🎶

Learning, singing, and a little sweetness make for a great day in the chorus room! 💛
