Hi everyone! I just wanted to give an update since I haven't posted in a while!

🎵📚 Voice lessons:
I am not accepting new long-term in-person students right now, as I'm not sure at the moment if I will be staying in the Valdosta area. I will still accept new online students as well as in-person students who just want voice lessons for a short time for something specific. I will let you know when I will be accepting new long-term in-person students again and if I have moved.

🎶🎤 Performances:
I know I haven't promoted this here before, but I am available to sing at events, such as weddings, birthdays, and other special events. You can find samples of my singing on this page or on my website hannaivey.weebly.com. For more information and for pricing, please message me.

✒️📝 Music writing:
I am also taking commissions for music-related writing, such as program notes, score prefaces, and articles. You can find samples of my work on my website. For more information and for pricing, please message me.

"Love Let the Wind Cry...How I Adore Thee" by Undine Smith Moore

Final song from the recital

I am very grateful to Mrs. Gina Lawhon for her wonderful playing and the time she put in to the recital and to Mrs. Marti Schert for all of her help in making this recital happen.

When I first heard this song, I thought it was one of the most beautiful songs I had ever heard! When I decided to add it to the recital, I knew it had to be the finale!

From the program notes:

Undine Smith Moore (1904-1989) was an American composer and music educator. She is known as the “Dean of Black Women composers.” She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fisk University and a Master of Arts from Columbia University. She also studied at Julliard and was the first graduate of Fisk University to receive a scholarship to Julliard. She taught at Virginia State College, now Virginia State University, for over 40 years. She was one of the founders of the Black Music Center there, and she considered this one of the proudest moments in her career. Some of her best-known works are her choral pieces, but she also wrote art songs, solo piano pieces, and chamber music.

“Love Let the Wind Cry…How I Adore Thee” is based on a poem by the Greek poet Sappho. The English text of the poem used in the song is a rendering by Canadian poet Bliss Carmen, based on a translation by H.T. Wharton. It was first performed at the wedding of Jewel and Leon Thompson. The lyrical sections of this song are contrasted with the more speechlike sections of the song, helping to create the lively and passionate atmosphere of the song.

"Ah, Love but a day!" by Amy Beach

From the program notes:

Amy Beach (1867-1944) was an American composer in pianist. She was a child prodigy in music, starting to compose at age four and playing piano pieces by Handel, Chopin, and Beethoven at age seven. She began performing in public at age 16 and played with the Boston Symphony orchestra at age 18. In 1885, she married Dr. Henry H.A. Beach, after which her performances were limited to one to two each year. Her husband did, however, support her career as a composer. She taught herself more about composition by analyzing scores. After the death of her husband, she resumed her performing career. She was the first female composer to have a symphony performed by a major orchestra and was one of the first American classical composers to gain international approval without a European education in music.

"Laue Sommernacht" by Alma Schindler-Mahler

This is the final German song from A Celebration of Women and Song

Alma Schindler-Mahler was an amazing composer and an extremely intelligent woman. When she married Gustav Mahler, he made her stop composing as a condition of their marriage. She wrote about 50 songs in her lifetime, most of them before she married Gustav Mahler, but unfortunately only about 17 survive today. Alma Mahler-Schindler would marry two more influential men in the artistic sphere in her lifetime: the architect Walter Gropius in 1915 and the writer Franz Werfel in 1929.

"Laue Sommernacht" is a beautiful song about love and a couple finding themselves within the context of the relationship. It has rich harmonies and several changes in tempo.

"Lorelei" by Clara Schumann

Last Clara Schumann song from the recital

It tells the story of a siren named Lorelei causing a sailor to crash his boat and be swallowed by the waves with her singing

"Liebst du um Schönheit" by Clara Schumann, another one of my favorites from A Celebration of Women and Song

This is from a set of 12 songs that Clara and her husband Robert decided to publish together, with nine songs by Robert and three by Clara. I love the poem by Friedrich RĂĽckert used for this song, and Clara Schumann sets it so well.

Here is the translation:

If you love for beauty,
O don’t love me!
Love the sun,
She has golden hair!

If you love for youth,
O don’t love me!
Love the spring,
It’s young every year!

If you love for wealth,
O don’t love me!
Love the mermaid,
She has many clear pearls!

If you love for love,
O yes, love me!
Love me always,
I’ll love you forever!

"Sie liebten sich beide" by Clara Schumann

1st of the German songs and 1st of three songs by Clara Schumann from A Celebration of Women and Song

She's my favorite composer. There's something so special about her Lieder. She was also a concert pianist. This song tells the story of two people who loved each other, but neither one will admit it to the other, and they spend the rest of their lives suffering because of it.

Final French song from A Celebration of Women and Song

Soir d'hiver by Augusta Holmès

Holmès wrote both the words and music to this song. It's one of my favorites and one I will keep in my repertoire and continue to work on!

3rd French song from A Celebration of Women and Song

"Mandoline" by Poldowski

There are some poems that have been set to music by multiple composers. "Mandoline" by Paul Verlaine is one of those poems. The versions by Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy are well-known. I was curious if any women had set the poem to music and found this version my Poldowski. Poldowski is a pseudonym for Régine Wieniawski, who published music under many names throughout her life.
