Valdosta State University’s Alyssa Vallad and Dr. Michelle MacLellan traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, Aug. 1-4 for the American Phytopathological Society’s Plant Health 2026. It was an opportunity for the student-faculty research duo to learn from leaders driving the field forward, discover groundbreaking research, and build connections that matter.

During the conference, Vallad, a senior biology major from Riverview, Florida, shared the latest update on the team's efforts to investigate a plant disease that could have significant implications for South Georgia’s tomato and pepper producers. She plans to continue her work with MacLellan, assistant professor of biology, throughout the 2026-2027 school year. 🔥

Event is open to the community. The presentations are part of the experiential learning opportunities at Valdosta State University

Our students are staying engaged this summer through exciting experiential learning opportunities!

Students participating in the Mellon-funded Humanities Internship Program are completing service-learning experiences with nonprofits and cultural centers across the region, gaining valuable hands-on experience while making a positive impact in their communities.

Meanwhile, students in the Blazer Summer Research Institute are collaborating closely with faculty mentors and fellow researchers on applied research projects, innovation initiatives, and product development.

We are excited to see the results of their hard work and the ways they have applied their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom at the Blazer Summer Research Institute Showcase on July 31. The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend!
