Remember being this excited about something as a child?

Not just excited, but really, really excited?

Perhaps that is what’s missing from your martial arts training.

As adults, we tend to get into a pattern of routine, working out, practicing, and just checking the boxes with our training.

Some just coast along indefinitely. Others really grind to make progress and get their black belt.

But, when was the last time you really just let yourself have fun with it.

Children automatically know how to have fun with everything, and they have to learn to have discipline to be constructive with the fun they are having in the thing they are doing.

Adults tend to get so entrenched by the disciplines of life that they need to learn to have fun.

It’s not a matter of doing extraordinary things that are fun to relearn this, though there isn’t anything wrong with that.

It’s a matter of finding the fun in everything, and in this case, martial arts.

If we can take the lessons of having fun with everything like kids from the children around us and utilize our experience in discipline to be constructive with our training…

Watch out, you’ll make some serious gains.

And you’ll have fun with the process.

It’s a subtle but significant mindset shift that makes all the difference in the world.

The secret is to have fun - serious fun.

Something begins to happen when you practice forms - your character develops into the strongest version of you.

Here’s what’s going on here: certain movements create certain characteristics in a person.

Think of football, yoga, or even chess - ever notice how these movements create a certain expression in character in those that practice them?

This doesn’t just happen with movement but also with lack of movement, which is weirdly a form of movement.

All movement changes us.

Forms practice in Pai Lum has the curious effect of bringing out the stronger, better version of our character.

How? Well, not sure exactly. But, the repetition and intention to perfect this specific movement tends to enhance energy while quieting the monkey brain, allowing the true inner being to take over.

And that’s where the magic happens.

That one reason is simple: traditional training with a modern approach helps you reach your goals.

It can be difficult to find a school that preserves traditional methods while teaching them in a way that makes sense in modern life.

Pai Lum gives you practical training in self-defense, fighting, forms, weapons, personal development, health, and mindfulness—while making those methods accessible to people from many different ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels.

That means traditional training isn’t reserved only for the die-hard, gung-ho young practitioner. It can become part of your life in a way that works for you.

And this isn’t a marketing gimmick. It reflects the long standing culture and philosophy of Pai Lum: to share a better way of living and give people tools they can integrate into their own lives as they see fit.

Traditional training with a modern approach allows you to learn the martial art in full while using it to support your personal goals, strengthen your everyday life, and create lasting success.

But I’m not trying to become some world class martial artist, black belt isn’t really my goal, I’m not worried about being the best, etc.

People start martial arts for all kinds of reasons and have variously different goals, but these are some of the common things we hear from people when they start, so let’s lean into them for a moment 🙂

Why put a roof on how high you can go?

Why shoot yourself in the foot at the starting line?

It sounds realistic to say what you honestly feel you’re capable of, but a shift in that mindset starts with this - it is guaranteed that someone or multiple people out there have started where you are starting from and have gone further than you’d ever imagine possible.

How many people were told that they’d amount to nothing in life by a teacher or coach but in actuality they did become world famous in something?

How many amputees have finished and placed well in marathons and Iron Man competitions despite their conditions?

The same can be true for you!

You can go further than you ever thought possible, but not if you put a roof on your success and shoot yourself in the foot at the starting line.

There’s an old saying - shoot for the stars and you’ll hit the moon.

If you want to hit your own personal goals in martial arts, don’t just aim for them.

Aim for goals that are further and higher than the ones you’d like to hit.

Greater things happen when we set higher standards and goals for ourselves - it makes us level up and become the person who achieves those goals.

Even though black belt or being a world class martial artist or being the best may not necessarily be your reasons to start - what would happen if you somehow adopted these into your mindset from the start?

Shoot for the stars and you’ll hit the moon.

“Burnout” can be thought of as energy that has left the body.

Think of it like a faucet left on, or a window left open, or a door not closed, or a fireplace not properly put out.

As the natural elements take over the house, the house begins to crumble and even burn down.

Each day, after each use, remember to:
Turn off the faucets.
Close the windows.
Shut the doors.
Put out the fire.

Everything must be completed.

Before meditating at night:
Take a shower.
Fold and put away your laundry.
Pack your food and bag for tomorrow.
Keep the lights low.
Don’t overwhelm your senses.

Basically, close the loops in your mind and body through functional rituals that tell your nervous system and spirit that you’re safe, you’re done for the day, and that all will be ok.

Now you’re ready for meditation.

This is one way you can help yourself avoid burnout.

Every night try to reset your body, mind, and spirit with functional rituals that close out your day, and then sit down to meditate.

Bonus old school hack, if you dare - pray to the Lord about whatever is on your mind before or after you meditate :)

Enjoy!
