Vade Mecum Information Gathering - Survey closes on 9/8/25

Soon the Vade Mecum Area at Hanging Rock State Park will be reopening, including the historic hotel for overnight guests and the day-use area. Many people in the community have memories of their time at Vade Mecum/Camp Sertoma or have heard stories from people that have. We are gathering information about the site. If you have memories or materials related to the site that you would be willing to share, please let us know below.

Vade Mecum Mineral Springs Resort, one of three mineral springs resorts in Stokes County, was opened in 1901 for guests take in the spring's healing waters and the grand landscape of the Saura Mountains. After the resort closed, the site was transformed into the Vade Mecum Camp and Conference Center by the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. The conference center remained in operation from the 1930s to the 1960s. Over the next several decades, from the 1970s until 2013, the place was used as a summer camp. Throughout most of that time it was known as Camp Sertoma. It was run off-and-on by several organizations including the Sertoma Club, 4-H, and NC State University. Today, the land and remaining buildings are part of of Hanging Rock State Park.
