If we want children’s behavior to meet our expectations, we must explicitly teach and model those expectations. Every August that’s our focus. We teach our schedule, routines, how to use materials, table manners, proper hand washing, and more!

We spend a lot of time assessing children.

It’s time we assess the practice shaping them.

Ok Solano County. Here are some offerings for little littles and school age children. A new venue for me. Help me get the word out.

September classes are discounted. Makes for a great opportunity to check out something new.

Most Pre-K classrooms rotate between two types of play. Free choice centers and the occasional dramatic play corner.

There are at least eight. 😅

Early childhood research maps a full taxonomy, and each one builds something different:

📚 Sensory Play → vocabulary and early science
🧱 Constructive Play → spatial reasoning and problem-solving
🎭 Dramatic Play → language and emotional regulation
🌉 Guided Play → the bridge between play and instruction
🏃 Movement Play → self-regulation and focus
🎨 Creative Play → fine motor and self-expression
🎲 Games with Rules → turn-taking and early strategy
🌱 Free Play → autonomy and intrinsic motivation

The two most underused in our experience? Guided play and games with rules.

Guided play gets skipped because it feels like "not really teaching." Games with rules get pushed to the end of the year because teachers assume four-year-olds can't handle them. Both assumptions cost kids critical development windows for executive function and academic readiness.

Play isn't the reward after the learning happens. It's how the learning happens, across all eight modes, not just the two on rotation this week. 💛

Which type is missing from your weekly plans? Drop it in the comments 👇
