Muharram is one of the four sacred months chosen by Allah. It is a time to increase in worship, avoid sins, and reflect on our relationship with Him.
What Is Muharram?
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four sacred months chosen by Allah.
"Indeed, the number of months ordained by Allah is twelve—in Allah’s Record since the day He created the heavens and the earth—of which four are sacred. That is the Right Way. So do not wrong one another during these months."
Quran 9:36
Which Are the Four Sacred Months?
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“(The division of time has turned to its original form which was current when Allah created the Heavens and the Earths. The year is of twelve months, out of which four months are sacred: Three are in succession Dhul-Qa' da, Dhul-Hijja and Muharram, and (the fourth is) Rajab of (the tribe of) Mudar which comes between Jumadi-ath-Thaniyah and Sha ban.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3197
What Should We Do During the Sacred Months?
While sins are forbidden throughout the year, a believer should be especially careful during the sacred months and strive to increase righteous deeds.
Avoid:
▪ Sins and disobedience
▪ Oppressing others
▪ Backbiting
▪ Foul speech
Increase:
▪ Salah
▪ Quran
▪ Dhikr
▪ Charity
▪ Fasting
“So do not wrong one another during these months. And fight the polytheists together as they fight together against you. And know that Allah is with those mindful ˹of Him˺.”
Quran 9:36
Why Is Muharram Called “Allah’s Month”?
Muharram is the only month specifically attributed to Allah in this manner, highlighting its virtue and honor.
It was narrated from Humaid bin ’Abdur-Rahman - that is, Ibn ’Awf - that Abu Hurairah said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘The best fasting after the month of Ramadan is the month of Allah, Al-Muharram, and the best prayer is prayer at night.’”
Sunan an-Nasa’i 1613
What Is Ashura and Why Do We Fast on Ashura?
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina, he found (the Jews) fasting on the day of ‘Ashura’ (i.e. 10th of Muharram). They used to say:
“This is a great day on which Allah saved Moses and drowned the folk of Pharaoh. Moses observed the fast on this day, as a sign of gratitude to Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“I am closer to Moses than they.”
So, he observed the fast (on that day) and ordered the Muslims to fast on it.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3397
Should We Fast the 9th Too?
Best practice:
◾ 9th & 10th Muharram
◾ Or 10th & 11th Muharram
◾ At minimum, the 10th
It was narrated from Ibn ’Abbas that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If I live until next year, I will fast the ninth day (of Muharram) too.”
Sunan Ibn Majah 1736
The Reward of Fasting Ashura
A single day of fasting can be a means of immense forgiveness from Allah.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Fasting the day of ‘Ashura’, I hope, will expiate for the sins of the previous year.”
Sunan Ibn Majah 1738
The Martyrdom of Husayn (رضي الله عنه)
On the 10th of Muharram, the beloved grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, Husayn ibn Ali (رضي الله عنه), was martyred.
We love him and are saddened by this tragedy. However, grief should be expressed in ways that please Allah, not through self-harm, striking oneself, wailing, or tearing one’s clothes.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“He who slaps (his) cheeks, tears (his) clothes, and calls with the call of the Jahiliyyah is not one of us.”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 999
Muharram is not merely the beginning of a new year. It is one of the sacred months chosen by Allah, a month of increased worship, reflection, and obedience.
Ya Allah, allow us to honor what You have honored, increase us in righteous deeds, forgive our sins, and grant us the reward of fasting Ashura.
Aameen.

From Feminism to Faith: Nikki’s Journey to Islam
Nikki, a famous Russian TikToker with over 2 million followers, once lived as a passionate feminist. She believed women must do everything alone, without help. But life experiences and deep reflection led her to question that mindset.
Her turning point came in 2021 when she admired the beauty of the hijab in a Spanish TV series. Soon after, conversations with Muslim colleagues and her own research opened her eyes to the truth about Jesus (peace be upon him) and the rights Islam gives to women.
By March 2022, Nikki embraced Islam wholeheartedly. She recalls:
"When I said the Shahada, all the noise in my mind disappeared in a second. A deep peace filled me. I was no longer the same person—I had found the truth."
Today, Nikki uses her platform to share Islam’s beauty and defend women’s dignity. Despite facing online hate, she receives countless messages from girls inspired to learn about Islam—and many even accept it.
Her message to the world:
"Give Islam a chance. Study it with a clear mind, free from stereotypes. You will see it is pure truth."
