Montessori school offering Preschool, Kindergarten and Child Care to ages 2.5y - 6y in a cozy residential one-room school house

We believe in the Montessori and RIE philosophies. Preparing ourselves and the environment for the children to guide them through practical life skills, sensorial, language, math, science, geography and nature. Independence, confidence, self regulation, auto education, and sense of order, are all developmental gains through the Montessori environment.

Why Do Montessori Preschools Have So Many Materials?

Ever noticed how Montessori classrooms for preschoolers are filled with beautifully crafted, hands-on materials? And how as children grow into the elementary years (ages 6-9), the number of physical materials gradually decreases, giving way to more abstract work? There’s a fascinating reason behind this shift!

Montessori education is rooted in child development—meaning materials evolve alongside a child's cognitive and neurological growth. At the preschool level (ages 3-6), hands-on materials are essential because young children learn primarily through sensory experiences and movement. They absorb knowledge by touching, manipulating, and exploring concrete objects that directly represent concepts.

For example:
🔹 The Pink Tower teaches visual discrimination of size.
🔹 Golden Beads help children understand the decimal system by physically handling quantity.
🔹 The Movable Alphabet allows them to build words before they can write fluently.

But when children reach elementary age (6-9), their minds begin shifting toward abstract thought. Instead of needing physical objects for every concept, they start making connections without requiring concrete materials.

Now, instead of counting beads, they can mentally process math equations. Instead of working with physical grammar symbols, they understand sentence structures intuitively. The shift is natural and aligns with their growing ability to think conceptually. You’ll still find Montessori materials for Math and Language in the elementary Montessori classroom.

The use of many Montessori materials at the preschool age allows for hands-on learning which lays the foundation for deeper, abstract thinking later on. It’s all part of Montessori’s carefully designed learning journey🌱✨

Cherishing the little moments is the most rewarding part of working with children, but having the right teachers by your side makes the day that much better! I am so grateful for my staff of teachers who have supported me in this recent expansion and who are so attentive to the children’s developing needs. I am so grateful to spend my days with these ladies and I cherish each of them for their own special skills and perspectives in life. They each bring a unique presence to our program and the children adore them as well!
