Today is a very special day for me. My friend and student Craig Doerfert is a BLACK BELT WORLD CHAMPION! 🥇🌎

He had 5 extremely tough matches and showed everything he has been building for a long time: discipline, courage, technique, dedication, and heart.

I am very proud to be part of this journey as his professor, coach, and friend. We worked very hard together through difficult training sessions, adjustments, preparation, and countless hours of dedication. I gave everything I could as his coach, and today he is reaping the rewards of all the hard work, discipline, and effort he has put in every single day.

Watching one of my students become a black belt world champion is something I cannot fully put into words.

Your son loved the first Jiu-Jitsu class. He left happy, excited and wanting to come back.

After two or three classes, he comes to you and says:

“I don’t want to go anymore. I don’t like Jiu-Jitsu anymore.”

And many parents, without understanding the reason, simply answer:

“All right, so you don’t have to go anymore.”

But what really happened?

Some children, especially between 4 and 6 years old, have this resistance after the first classes. Not because they stopped liking Jiu-Jitsu, but because they realized that there are rules and limits there.

They can’t do everything they want, when they want and the way they want.

They will not always be the first. They won’t always win. You’ll need to wait your turn. They will need to listen to the teacher. And they will go through small frustrations.

Jiu-Jitsu can be fun, but it’s not just children’s recreation. It is a martial art that teaches discipline, respect, order, hierarchy, self-control and perseverance.

When the child says he doesn’t want to go anymore, this is often just a reaction to the discomfort of finding limits and facing difficulties.

It is precisely at this moment that father and mother need to be the firm point.

Talk to your child, try to understand what happened and teach him that feeling difficult does not mean that he needs to give up.

Because, if we allow our children to abandon everything whenever a frustration, a rule or something uncomfortable arises, we will be teaching that giving up is the solution.

Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t just prepare children for the mat.
