Mohawk Valley Community College is a public, co-educational institution within the SUNY system offering two-year degrees and shorter-term certificates on campuses in Utica and Rome and online. Our programs prepare students for careers in many high-demand fields, including business, hospitality, art, healthcare, social services, education, engineering, manufacturing, and trades, and for further college study. 🎓 A little cake, a lot of Hawk pride, and 80 years of impact 💚

Yesterday was Alumni Day, and the MVCC Foundation took our 80th anniversary celebration on the road, visiting local businesses and organizations that are part of the MVCC story in a special way — places where our alumni are building careers and making a difference every day.

The team stopped by Oneida County Government, Indium Corporation, and Rome Health to celebrate the Hawks working at each location, sharing commemorative T-shirts, a personalized anniversary cake, and plenty of school spirit.

We’re proud to see so many Hawks putting their MVCC education to work right here in our community. From the classroom to the workplace, our story lives on through you. 💚

🏛 80 years. Thousands of stories. 💚

MVCC is celebrating 80 years of big dreams, new beginnings, and lives transformed through learning.

Every great story starts somewhere, and ours began this week in 1946, when we opened as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts & Sciences at Utica — one of five institutes established as a state educational experiment to provide job training for returning WWII veterans. Registration was held on Oct. 14, and on Oct. 15, 1946, 53 students joined 11 faculty members for the inaugural day of classes at the Country Day School on Genesee Street in New Hartford (where the Wedgewood Apartments now stand). More than two-thirds of the students were military veterans.

Since those early days with just one major — Retail Business Management — we’ve grown and evolved to meet the changing needs of our students, employers, and community. Today, we’re proud to be the community’s college, opening doors to opportunity through 90+ academic programs, workforce training, and lifelong learning.

Here’s to the students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members who have shaped our story — and to all the stories yet to be written! 💚

🎉 Congratulations to MVCC Athlete of the Week — Myah Ouderkirk of the MVCC Volleyball Team! 🏐

Myah has had an outstanding all-around performance, recording 5 service aces and a .400 hitting percentage, making an impact both at the service line and at the net. Her consistency at the service line played a huge role in the Hawks’ offense. Myah is a freshman from Camden, N.Y.

On campus this week — all events are free for MVCC students!

🌈 National Coming Out Day — 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, Wilcox Hall Lobbies, Utica. Celebrate the LGBTQ+ community by supporting those who are living as their authentic selves by “coming out” to their family and friends. This event will share the coming out stories of our campus and alumni community.

🔄 Transfer Toolkit Workshop — 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, Academic Building Lobby, Utica. Join MVCC's Student Support Advisors to create a toolkit of information and resources to use as you are researching transfer opportunities, filling out applications, sending transcripts, and more.

🖌 Paint Night — 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, Alumni College Center Commons, Utica. A fun experience for students to explore art, make friends, and get creative.

🎉 Mo’s Birthday Bash — 12-1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, Academic Building Lobby. Join MVCC mascot Mo Hawk for a birthday celebration as the College marks its 80th anniversary. There will be free food and games.
