If a public figure calls people with dyslexia “dumb,” that’s not just offensive—it’s factually wrong. Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference, not a measure of intelligence. Research over decades shows people with dyslexia span the full range of intelligence. Many with dyslexia have served in office in Oklahoma and Nationally, led financial institutions, and argued before the Supreme Court. Dyslexia is only one part of who a person is and is not automatically an indicator of their worth.

I experience this on both a professional and personal level. While my testing indicates a high IQ, I have dyslexia. Reading for pleasure simply isn't my thing but I love diving into research. I passionately advocate for students with dyslexia because of how profoundly it affects children and their families. Pursuing a second career, I completed my master’s degree, and years of study have earned me credentials as a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist (IDA) and Certified Academic Language Therapist (ALTA). Today, I teach fellow dyslexics the skills they need to learn to read.

What concerns me most is that when students hear statements like those circulating today from public figures— they start to believe them. That is where real harm happens. Will a student be teased next week on the playground or in the classroom because of such statements? Will a teacher continue to believe a student with dyslexia is lazy? I hope not!

What matters is access to the evidence aligned instruction and tools to support their learning. Students deserve well-trained teachers who can support them while they work twice as hard as their peers. Decoding Dyslexia Oklahoma has advocated for students with dyslexia and their families for over 10 years. If you know a struggling reader or have concerns about your child having dyslexia, follow our page or visit our website, DecodingDyslexiaOk.org, to learn facts backed by research.
