A heavy contact point is information rich. You can feel tissue tension and joint play much more intrinsically.

I have also found that much like a hug a heavy contact point can have a calming affect on the client which can change pain perspective and a more confident feel from the therapist.

So often to train anything waist down we load either the top (squat bar) or the bottoms (leg press).

However the ankle weight gives you the advantage of wrapping the weight around a limb. This allows you to add speed and change of direction without disrupting the movement pathway.

They are also extremely portable.

You may be thinking โ€œyes, but they are not very heavy. How will we get a good stress stimuli?

If you do your traditional training program and just mix in ankle weights randomly you will lose the intent and be unsuccessful.

If you are deliberate about when to utilize them in your training program and in what positions then you can drive in good purposeful training.

I like to start my athletes with acquiring active range first because most of my athletes come to me with an issue and I have found active to be safer as a starting point.

I coach them to not go beyond a position of pain and to yield right before the pain site before beginning the isometric work.

Every position we program has a specific intent. We do not try to acquire more mobility because it looks pretty. We are chasing a specific adaptation every step of the way based on our initial and continuing assessments ๐Ÿงฌ

I have a client who is a successful businessman and wants to be able to perform at his highest level physically.

I told him you can either have a career like an NFL running back and enjoy 4-6 years of high gear performance or you can play life like a golfer and accumulate wins over a long period of time.

If you have a six pack and are athletic but youโ€™re in constant pain whenever you move how long can you keep doing the things you love? Or better yet how long can others count on you? Will you be able to perform when it is really counts?
