The students had a great adventure this week and visited (board member) Karl's hobby farm. He needed everyone to help him move juvenile chickens from their hatching pen to an outdoor field so that they could begin free-range living. The boys helped to move 30 of them and gave each one a name during the process (Blueberry, Lemon Square, Slinky, Thanos, and Peter were a few of the memorable names). After that, the boys fed the nesting hens, gathered a few eggs, and enjoyed petting the two resident pigs. Much fun was had and a lot of learning, to boot!

The Redtail students have been learning about early hominids and also talked about the migration patterns of early humans. They then placed push pins on a the cork board world map to indicate where the migration routes began and the paths of migration.

The Redtail students finished their graffiti projects this week! After completing their names, they worked hard and took turns to craft the brick wall background by using sponges and paint to make the bricks and mortar. Then, the students attached the brick background to the bulletin board outside the classroom and carefully arranged their names on top of the brick wall. This project has really helped to create some art aficionados!

We were grateful for the invitation to join Campus Middle School for Girls for a field trip to the Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois. The students from both schools thoroughly enjoyed exploring the hands-on exhibits and discovered some different ways that genomics is used to confront global issues. They particularly enjoyed practicing driving the crop robot.

For their most recent art projects, the Redtail students learned to write their names using graffiti lettering. As part of the process, they learned how to make block lettering, add drop shadows, and create color harmony to make their names really stand out. There have also been discussions about when graffiti is welcome and when it is vandalism. The students are very enthusiastic art learners!

The Redtail students went to Lake of the Woods in Mahomet for their weekly adventure on Friday. They visited the Museum of the Grand Prairie and wrote about an exhibit at the museum that resonated with them. Afterwards, they ate lunch in the outdoor classroom. After lunch, lots of fun was had exploring the koi fish pond, paths, and playing Among Us.

When life gives us lemons, we make lemonade!

Today, the Redtail students experienced contextualized and experiential learning in order to find equivalent ratios. They looked at a recipe for lemonade and scaled down the recipe since there were fewer lemons available than what was called for in the recipe.

First, the students softened the lemons by rolling and tossing them. Next, they cut and squeezed the lemons. Then, the students added sugar and water to the pitcher. Finally, they enjoyed their tasty homemade lemonade!
