The Department of African American Studies stands alongside its Black students as we call for the implementation of !

BUF UIUC has received public support for from the Department of African American Studies! Please share to spread awareness about our campaign to not only have more Black students recruited and retained at this university, but also to transform the entire campus community.
"Our students regularly encounter racial slurs and insults in passing, scribblings on the Quad, and racist notes on doors. Emboldened white supremacists basking in the after-glow of the recent presidential election have struck fear in the hearts of students of color on campus. Black students have received invitations to a lynching. Students have encountered images of the racist “Chief” mascot adorned on “Unofficial” t-shirts, nooses hung on doors, and racist posters on campus. Every year, we tread over the same tracks as the year before, constantly working to protect our students from white supremacy and other forms of hate. These are common features of life for African American college students on the campus of UIUC. Given these realities, we support the Black United Front in seeking to increase African American student enrollment at--and to transform--the University. We ask that you join us in this endeavor. As faculty dedicated to realizing the historic motto of African American Studies --“academic excellence and social responsibility”--we heartily support Project 1000."

Black Education Matters!

Even though Black people make up 15% of Illinois, and Black students make up nearly 18% of Illinois public schools, at UIUC we still represent less than 6% of the student body.
WE DEMAND: UIUC recruit and enroll at least 1000 Black students with each incoming class by Fall 2020 and that the Department of African American Studies, the Bruce D. Nesbitt Cultural Center, and the recruitment and retention programs that target Black students all receive the resources they need to be successful.

Black students deserve better!

Why Poor Schools Can’t Win at Standardized Testing The companies that create the most important state and national exams also publish textbooks that contain many of the answers. Unfortunately, low-income school districts can’t afford to buy them.

If not now, then when?

: The UIUC Black United Front (BUF), a collective of Black students from numerous black student organizations, demands the implementation of Project 1000 as we seek to provide this campus community with a sensible step forward on the issue of chronic Black student under-representation. Even though Black people make up 15% of Illinois, and Black students make up nearly 18% of Illinois public schools, at UIUC we still represent less than 6% of the student body.

WE DEMAND: UIUC recruit and enroll at least 1000 Black students with each incoming class by Fall 2020.
