The NSF Science and Technology Center for Quantitative Cell Biology is located at the Beckman Institute at University of Illinois.

Our goal: To make 4D (space plus time) computational whole cell models of bacterial, yeast, and mammalian cells.

QCB welcomes new staff! Alfia Parvez joined the Center in December 2025 as a research software engineer with primary responsibilities as the Center’s GPU programmer. In January the Center added two new external evaluators, Ayeha Boyce of ASU and Courtney Stone of the University of Illinois.

Congratulations, Martin!

The American Chemical Society has announced that Martin Gruebele, professor emeritus of chemistry and QCB Team Leader, is the 2026 recipient of the Peter Debye Award in Physical Chemistry. He and other ACS award recipients will be honored at an award ceremony on March 24, 2026, at the ACS Spring Meeting in Atlanta. Established in 1960, the award encourages and rewards outstanding research of a theoretical or experimental nature in the field of physical chemistry. Read more:

Deadline extended! Apply now for QCB Summer School

The Summer School in Quantitative Cell Biology is designed for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers in physics, biophysics, chemical and life sciences, and engineering who seek to expand their research skills in quantitative methods for studying and modelling cells. The school will include lectures, mini-courses, and hands-on training in experimental and computational techniques. It takes place July 21-25 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA.

The application deadline is March 31, however, applications will be accepted after that date until all slots are filled. The school is free but you must apply! Housing, some meals, and all course materials are provided.
