We are saddened by the passing of Professor Yuan-Xiang Pan, a faculty member at the Division of Nutritional Sciences.

For more than two decades at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Pan advanced our understanding of how diet and environmental factors can influence health and disease through epigenetic changes. He was also deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of nutrition scientists.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his students, colleagues, friends, family, and all those whose lives he touched.

✨ Congratulations to DNS doctoral student Nadine Veasley on presenting her exit seminar, “More Than Meets the Calorie: The Effects of a High-Fiber Cereal on the Metabolizable Energy of the Typical American Diet, the Gut Microbiome, and Individual Responses.”

Nadine shared her research examining how a high-fiber cereal may influence metabolizable energy, the gut microbiome, and individual responses within the context of a typical American diet. We’re proud to celebrate this important milestone and her contributions to nutrition science. 👏🎓

🌱 Does a whole-food plant-based meal support muscle recovery better than a nutrient-matched shake after strength training?

New research led by DNS faculty member Dr. Nicholas Burd at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign found that both options produced similar muscle-building responses—but significantly less muscle protein synthesis than a post-workout meal containing lean pork with the same amount of protein.

The findings highlight how protein source, food composition, and carbohydrate intake may influence post-exercise muscle recovery.
