Join CU Tango Music for a vibrant week of community-centered events celebrating the music, dance, and culture of tango in downtown Urbana, IL!
Urbana Tango Week, public tango concerts and other arts events, and Tango with Rod and Jenny, workshops and dance night for tang social dancers, happen alongside the CU Tango Music Workshop, a week-long immersive educational experience for new and experienced adult and adolescent tango musicians.
Events are free and open to the public (excluding tango dance workshops and milonga):
• Live concerts and live-music milonga* (entrance fee) by CU Tango Music Workshop faculty and participants
• Intro to Tango Dance class for beginners and live-music práctica
• Tango for All concert for all ages
• Jam and hangouts for musicians, dancers, and listeners
• Tango dance workshops for tango social dancers with Rod Relucio and Jenny Renee* (entrance fee)

Principles of Tango Arranging: Harmony and Voicing is an online course taught by composer and pianist Julián Peralta, designed for musicians interested in the harmonic language and arranging techniques of tango.

Across each session, combining lectures and practical homework, participants will explore the foundations of tango harmony, approaches to reharmonization, and strategies for clear, idiomatic voicing. The course focuses on writing for three to four voices and for two voices, emphasizing practical techniques used in contemporary tango arranging. Students will work with musical examples and exercises aimed at developing a deeper understanding of tango’s harmonic vocabulary and how to apply it in their own arrangements.

🗓 Schedule: Wednesdays, May 20 – June 17, 2026
🕘 Time: 9:00–11:00 PM CST (Online)
💲 Pricing: $25/class or $100/5 classes

Syllabus:
Harmonic language in tango
Reharmonization
Voicing 3 and 4 voices, 2 voices
Orchestration

Each class will include a reading assignment, lecture, exercise, homework assignment, and evaluation of homework.

Music assignments will be drawn from the library of traditional tango songs and assigned by the instructor. Participants are welcome to select additional music to arrange, which may be evaluated during class as time is available.

Eligibility
This class is open to musicians who have knowledge of basic music theory, including the ability to read music fluently and knowledge of basic harmony. The class is intended for musicians who have some foundational experience in transcribing or arranging tango or other musical repertoire.

Familiarity with music notation software (MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale, Dorico, etc) preferred but not required.
