The Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) cordially invites all first generation students to participate in “Why I’m First”, a new initiative that highlights the triumphs and achievements of first generation students through social media and event showcases. They will also be holding a kickoff First Generation Celebration on November 8 at the Bruce D Nesbitt African American Cultural Center (BNACC) that select participants would have the opportunity to present their story.
The primary focus of OMSA is to provide academic, professional, and personal development resources to historically marginalized communities. In particular, first generation students face a distinct set of hurdles to enter and remain in higher education, and they hope to educate and raise awareness within the community.
Submissions will be taken on a rolling basis; however, only submissions that are in by October 25 will be considered for presenting at the First Generation Celebration. However, with enough interest, we plan to host more events. Check out the submission form here: go.illinois.edu/whyimfirst.
They would love to collaborate to publicly recognize the sacrifice our community members have made in pursuit of higher education and better opportunities, and further unite our on-campus communities.

Seventy-five years ago, Executive Order 9066 paved the way to the profound violation of constitutional rights that resulted in the forced incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans. Featuring George Takei and many others who were incarcerated, as well as newly rediscovered photographs of Dorothea Lange, And Then They Came for Us brings history into the present, retelling this difficult story and following Japanese American activists as they speak out against the Muslim registry and travel ban.
dir. Abby Ginzberg and Ken Schneider, 2017. Followed by a discussion with Satsuki Ina, community activist, writer, and filmmaker.
