School Safety Week 2026

Dear USD116 Parents and Guardians,

At Urbana School District 116, we take our responsibility to keep our children and youth safe from threats and hazards very seriously. In collaboration with our local police and community partners, we continually review our safety plans and procedures to take the necessary steps for potential emergencies, while also complying with school codes and laws. These precautions are in keeping with school code 105 ILCS 128/ School Safety Drills as a response to acts of violence in schools.

In collaboration with the Urbana Police Department, USD116 will hold intruder drills during the week of September 14. Urbana Police, in conjunction with USD116 administration, will make planned visits to every school campus. The drills will be brief and result in very little loss of instructional time. Our drills are intended as preventative activities to help us implement the necessary measures needed to stop an emergency from happening or reduce the impact of an incident through drill and practice. Additionally, families play an important role in keeping our schools safe. If you are aware of an issue, please report it to the school or district.

Last school year, we adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), a crisis response protocol developed by the “I Love U Guys” Foundation. The SRP incorporates many of the concepts we already used, but offers more clarity and consistency in terminology among schools and first responders. It is based upon five actions: HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, EVACUATE, AND SHELTER. During our intruder drill and practice, we will be practicing the following actions: LOCKDOWN, HOLD, or EVACUATE.

You can find more information about the Standard Response Protocol on our website: https://usd116.org/safety/. While this page provides information on broad safety plans, it should be noted that our full plan cannot be shared publicly for security reasons.

As always, the safety and security of our students are of utmost importance, and we appreciate the support of the Urbana community during this time of review, drill, and practice.

Respectfully,

Urbana School District 116

We want to let you know about a few things at YRM:

Please do not drop off your student in the front of the building from 7:55-8:10 am. We understand it’s inconvenient, but this is for safety. We do not want students to get hit by oncoming traffic. If you are car drop off you must be in line at door 2, 7:55- 8:10 am and you will be let in. If you want to park and walk your student to door 2, PLEASE park on Elliot Street NOT on Anderson or Mumford. There is a crosswalk on Elliot and Anderson street. Door 2 closes at 8:10!

Our building can get very cold. Please send your student with a sweatshirt/sweater. We are working to resolve the issue. Thank you for your patience!
