Grainger Engineering innovation is heading to the FIFA World Cup 2026. ⚽
adidas cleats worn by players from England, Germany and Spain at the 2026 World Cup will feature microstructure technology developed in Professor William P. King, PhD’s lab from the Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois.
Nearly 20 years ago, the research started with polymer microstructures. Today, it is helping create cleats that can adapt to players’ movements, balancing agility and control on the field.
Learn how tiny structures are creating a big impact on the world stage.

During mastectomies, damage to sensitive nerves can lead to long-term pain and complications for patients. A team of Carle Illinois College of Medicine innovators is working to change that with NeuroGuard, a device designed to detect nerves in real time during surgery.
“NeuroGuard is about giving surgeons better tools and patients better outcomes,” said CI MED student Meenakshi Singhal, who leads the engineering development team.
The team collaborated with students from our Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to develop the computational models and electrical circuits powering the technology.
