Two of our Dispatchers, Aaron Null & Daytona Kellough attended The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for First Responders. This class teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults. Designed specifically for first responders, this certification course provides practical skills, and a proven 5-step action plan to offer initial support to someone experiencing a mental health crisis or challenge. They are now better equipped to handle these specific call types in our community.

Last Friday MHFA Instructor Jenni Snyder trained 20 first responders at Wayne Healthcare in Darke County in Mental Health First Aid. This is the fourth class Wayne Healthcare has sponsored for a different community group.

How to Subscribe to SMART Weather Alerts

A step-by-step guide for members using the Everbridge Member Portal

What this does:

SMART Weather subscriptions let you choose specific weather alerts you want to receive. When an opted-in alert affects an address in your Member Portal profile, Everbridge can automatically send the notification to your configured delivery methods.

You subscribed but do not receive an alert.

Check that the address/location in your Member Portal profile is correct and that the alert affects that location. Also confirm your delivery methods are configured. Automated weather notifications are sent to the delivery methods in your Member Profile when the subscription and geographic conditions are met.

Alerts are location based. You will only receive an alert if the weather event is directly impacting the area you subscribed to. If a weather event is occurring in the east part of the county, the west will not receive the alert.

The alerts are sent out directly by the National Weather Service. Not the Champaign County EMA nor the Champaign Countywide Communication Center (9-1-1). We do not have control on when they send alerts out.

Subscribe to weather alerts: (How to manage your alerts)

1. Open your profile subscriptions.
Sign in to the Everbridge Member Portal. On your profile, find the My Subscriptions section and select Edit.

2. Expand Weather Alerts.
In Alert Subscriptions, select Weather Alerts and expand the list to view the available weather alert types.

3. Choose the alerts you want.
Select the checkboxes for the weather events you want to receive. The available list depends on what your organization has configured and exposed in the Member Portal.

4. Review any required alerts.
Some organizations can mark certain alerts as Required. Required alerts are automatically subscribed and cannot be removed by the member.

5. Set optional quiet-period preferences.
If your organization allows it, open the Weather and Hazard Alerts settings and choose a Don’t contact me between time range and time zone. Quiet-period settings may not apply to certain high-risk alerts when an administrator has configured an override.

6. Save your selections.
Click Save. Your selected weather alerts are now part of your Member Portal subscription preferences.

Thank you Champaign County Emergency Management Agency for recognizing our Dispatchers with your Director's Commendation Award. We pride ourselves on being the best for the communities of Champaign County, and this award is very deserving for these three Dispatchers.

The thing about being a dispatcher that most people never think about is the sheer volume, pressure, and workload that comes with managing day-to-day operations.

When the recent storm impacted Champaign County, the fire departments, EMA, and law enforcement agencies, and local partners were each managing their respective zones, assignments, and responsibilities.

But there was one entity within our emergency services team that had a hand in every single call: the Champaign Countywide 911 Center.

That is something that deserves recognition.

One of the things we take great pride in here at the Champaign County Emergency Management Agency is the incredible team of partners we work alongside daily to accomplish the missions and tasks at hand. Our county dispatchers are a critical part of that team, often working behind the scenes while carrying an enormous responsibility.

Recently, we had the opportunity to visit the Champaign Countywide 911 Center and present the Champaign County Emergency Management Agency Director’s Commendation to three very deserving members of their team:

Dispatcher Leslie Massie
Dispatcher Deven Dixon
Dispatcher Kaylyn Dozier

While these three dispatchers consistently demonstrate professionalism, dedication, and compassion in their work, this particular commendation recognized their actions during a recent incident involving a pediatric patient experiencing a traumatic emergency.

Through their calm and professional handling of the call, they played an instrumental role in the successful outcome of the incident. Their ability to gather critical information, provide reassurance, coordinate resources, and maintain composure during an incredibly stressful situation is a testament to the importance of what they do every single day.

From the citizens of Champaign County, our partners throughout the emergency services community, and especially from all of us here at the Champaign County EMA: Thank You.

Thank you for the long hours, the difficult calls, the constant radio traffic, and the countless moments when you are the first voice someone hears during what may be the worst moment of their life.

We are thankful for you, proud to have you on our “team”, and grateful for everything you do for those who live, work, and visit this amazing community.

Does anyone recognize this dog or is missing him? Found today in the 2000 block of mutual union. Very young. Poss German shepherd or shepherd mix. Very sweet. If you have lost him please contact dispatch at 937-653-3409. He was taken to Barely Used Pets.

Please join us for our 2nd annual Pancake Sausage and Flower Sale on May 2nd from 7am until 11am. Our flower sale will run for an entire week. We are pleased to introduce our new alerting platform, Everbridge. This system offers enhanced security, dependable performance, and a unified solution for sending emergency messages. Everbridge is trusted by millions of users across more than 200 countries and territories and incorporates over 325 security controls. It delivers real-time alerts and instructions through multiple channels, including SMS, email, desktop notifications, and voice calls.

Please note that all residents must complete a new registration to receive alerts through Everbridge, even if you were previously signed up for CodeRED. Without registration, you will not receive emergency notifications.

We strongly encourage you to follow the registration instructions as soon as possible to stay informed and protected.

🎖️Molly Melchi is our Data Entry Clerk, and willingly steps into the role of a dispatcher when needed. With this being said, Molly was awarded the "Honorary Dispatcher" to show that we notice her efforts in being a team member🎖️ She has a multitude of skillset when it comes to public safety!

A CIT dispatcher (Crisis Intervention Team Dispatcher) is a 911 communications professional who has specialized training to recognize and respond appropriately to calls involving mental health crises, substance use issues, or emotional distress. CIT dispatchers are a vital link between the public and first responders.

A CIT dispatcher’s role goes beyond simply answering calls and sending police or EMS. They Identify mental health related situations early by listening for cues like confusion, distress, or erratic behavior. They ask targeted, calming questions to better understand what’s happening without escalating the caller. They prioritize the right response, which might mean sending specially trained CIT officers, crisis counselors, or EMS instead of a standard police response. They provide deescalation support over the phone, helping keep the person in crisis calm and safe as possible until help arrives. They relay critical information to responders, so they approach the situation with awareness and appropriate tactics.

Leslie Massie is the recipient for the 2025 Champaign Countywide Communication Center's CIT Telecommunicator of the Year.

Leslie completed a 40-hour CIT training back in 2018 and has used the tools to aide callers in crisis throughout the years. This award is so well deserved.

This evening, our dispatch family got together to wrap up National Public Safety Telecommunications Week with dinner, awards, and lots of laughs. More pictures to follow later, but for now we wanted to extend our sincerest gratitude to Pat and Patsy Thackery of Cafe Paradiso as well as Amy Forrest of In Good Taste Market for donating the most delicious food to our center. Everything was absolutely incredible and we are so grateful for your hospitality!
