An in-depth, deeply personal look at small town life, Medora is both an underdog basketball story and an inspiring tale of a community refusing to give up hope despite the brutal odds stacked against them. This Emmy Award-winning film aired on the acclaimed PBS series Independent Lens and received glowing reviews in Variety, The New York Times, the Village Voice, Entertainment Weekly, and Time, among others.

We'll have filmmaker Davy Rothbart AND film subject Dylan McSoley IN-PERSON to discuss the film and life since then.

In 1999, nine-year-old Emmanuel Sanford-Durant and his Washington, DC family began to film their daily lives in America's most dangerous neighborhood — just 17 blocks from the US Capitol building. Made in a unique collaboration with filmmaker and journalist Davy Rothbart, and spanning two decades, 17 BLOCKS illuminates a nation's ongoing crisis through one family's raw, stirring, and deeply personal saga. Nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, it was called "a singular achievement in documentary filmmaking" by Variety magazine.

We'll have Davy Rothbart in-person and three members of the Sanford family zooming in to discuss the film.
Free and open to the public. Tuesday at 7pm at Allen Hall.

Ok, this happened back in November, but it is still worth sharing that Michelle Obama retweeted a photo of students in front of Allen Hall volunteering to bring students to the polls on election day! We are so proud of Eusa Nia, the Black student union of Allen Hall and LAR.

Ceramics Club’s first session of the semester!

During musician and instrument designer, Moldover’s residency at Unit One/Allen Hall, he led basic soldering workshops for students to build their own Light Theremin (a light sensitive instrument that is also playable packaging for an album of original music), and a Voice Crusher (a pocket-sized, voice altering instrument that is also a USB drive).

Earlier this month we brought National Book Award finalist and Ignatz-winning cartoonist Shing Yin Khor as a Guest-in-Residence. They held workshops on watercolor painting, cartooning, q***r comics, wood-carving, and marionette making.

This Fall we hosted Drew and Johnny of Peace Paper Project for a week of papermaking, pulp painting, and pulp printing workshops in front of the hall.
