Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute (DISI) 01/17/2018

interdisciplinary summer institute on diverse intelligences

A new interdisciplinary summer institute aiming to bring together graduate students, postdocs, and other early career researchers interested in the study of mind, cognition, and intelligence for two weeks of transdisciplinary exploration is happening at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, from July 29 to August 12, 2018.

We're looking to build a diverse community of scholars across
disciplines such as anthropology, philosophy, ethology, computer science, psychology, etc.

Participants and faculty will fall roughly into three sub-themes: Recognizing Intelligences (non-human natural intelligences); Shaping Human Intelligences (how development, culture, technology, etc. shape human capacities); and Programming Intelligences (artificial intelligence and its social/philosophical implications). We’ve assembled an outstanding international faculty (and are adding more each month). We anticipate stimulating discussion and debate across a range of cutting-edge topics. In addition to attending lectures and engaging in discussions, participants will have the opportunity to develop collaborative interdisciplinary research projects with guidance from DISI faculty and staff.

More information about the institute, including funding, can be found at www.diverseintelligencessummer.com.

Feel free to contact Stephanie Meredith at [email protected] with any questions that aren't answered on the website!

Simulations show that small changes over next six years would result in faculty that reflect the Ph.D. pool within a single tenure cycle. “It’s not a quota,” he says. “It’s a mathematical reality.”

Science's Minority Talent Pool Is Growing—but Draining Away The number of Ph.D. graduates from underrepresented groups grew by nine times since 1980, but the number of assistant professors from those groups grew by just 2.6 times.
