Our Urbana High School CTE interns are gearing up for Spring 2027! Recently, graduate students from hosted an interactive seminar on resume writing and interview skills. This direct, 1-on-1 mentorship gives our seniors the confidence and polish they need before stepping out into the community to put their knowledge into practice. 💼

Urbana High School has run a Work-Based Learning program since the 1980s! This longstanding tradition allows seniors to head off-campus during the school day to gain real-world experience in career fields they plan to pursue in college and beyond.

Ms. Neal's Baking and Pastry students had a special guest this week, Mr. Jack! Mr. Jack is an SEA here at UHS who is known for making a big impact on student engagement and attendance in their classes. Many of our students would not be as successful as they are here at UHS without his support and encouragement.

Mr. Jack developed a gluten Intolerance that caused him to make changes in his eating habits. Students in Ms. Neal's Baking and Pastry courses have just begun their discussion on ingredient functionality and the purpose of each ingredient in a recipe. They learned that flour provides structure to baked products with a protein called gluten. Many individuals are allergic or have an intolerance to gluten which is a big concern when it comes to eating and preparing many baked goods. Mr. Jack decided to come in this week to share his experience as someone who has a gluten intolerance. He discussed with students many of the challenges of preparing baked goods that are gluten free and students had the opportunity to prepare his famous gluten-free pumpkin cookies!

We are proud to highlight our incredible partnership with ParenTeach Institute! 🌟

Through their comprehensive curriculum, students in our Human Development & Family Wellness and Advanced Child Care and Development Year 2 courses are gaining essential, real-world skills in caregiving, child development, and family health—equipping them to become strong future leaders, educators, and community members. 👶💬❤️

A special shoutout to Ms. Perez-Rosser, who was an early champion of this curriculum in our CTE program! 👏🏻 Beyond bringing this impactful curriculum into the classroom, Ms. Perez-Rosser has advocated for parenting and caregiving education by sharing her inspiring classroom experiences at fundraising events. This program is free thanks to the partnership with ISBE🎤👋🏽✨

Our Culinary Arts program is growing fast—so fast that two classes are running at the exact same time, even though we only have one kitchen classroom! This has caused us to get creative to serve our students interest.💡

Case in point: No-Bake Energy Bites lab in a standard classroom! We are working to put culinary prep tables in this space and the first one has arrived 🥣⚡

During this lab students focused on mastering critical kitchen communication skills through a partner exercise:

📖 The Reader: Reads the directions aloud, but isn't allowed to touch ingredients or make the recipe.

🥣 The Maker: Prepares the recipe relying purely on audio cues, without looking at the instructions.

In a fast-paced professional kitchen, clear communication and active listening are everything. Way to adapt, collaborate, and get it done! 🎯

Before stepping foot in the kitchen to cook, our foods 1 scholars are mastering the most important ingredients first: teamwork and communication!

We challenged them to guide a golf ball down a series of pipes into a tub—without touching the ball! 🎯

This hands-on challenge puts key Portrait of a Graduate skills directly into practice:

🗣️ Communication: Talking through strategy and timing adjustments in real-time.

🤝 Collaboration: Relying on every teammate to keep the line moving seamlessly.

💡 Problem-Solving: Adapting angles and speed when things don't go according to plan.
