's Sharva Hampton-Campbell has created a dynamic program that is geared to meeting the needs of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign students who have gone through the foster care system.

Those needs are made evident when comparing graduation rates. Nationally, 54 to 63 percent of non-foster youth graduate from college; only three to 11 percent of foster youth graduate.

The students in the program come from all across campus: social work, business, engineering, art, writing. “We’re open to any student who was in foster care, who was adopted through foster care, or who received guardianship through foster care,” Hampton-Campbell says. “They can enter the program at any time." The Village Project joins other programs on campus that identify students with needs, she says. “I’m hoping this will add to the offerings that as a campus we are extending to underrepresented students and students with needs beyond those of the average student.”

Dora Watkins, a second year student in the PhD program at the School of Social Work, is focusing her research on resilience and help-seeking behaviors among high-achieving black women.

Watkins was 13 years old when she knew she was called to be a social worker. “At that point I was being adopted for the second time,” she says. “I was in and out of court, and I developed a close relationship with the social worker I had. I realized this is what I want to do. I want to help kids like me, families like mine.

Recently, one of our lab members Allyson presented a poster at the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) in Atlanta, GA! Her poster was about a form of dating violence that targets someone’s LGBTQ identity (e.g., isolating them from LGBTQ peers, threatening to “out” them). Allyson found that among first and second year university students that had been in dating relationships, over half experienced identity abuse and identity abuse was associated with depression. Great work, Allyson!

This week's Meet the Team Monday is...Riley Murphy

What program are you in? BSW.

What projects have you worked on with the Violence Prevention Research Lab? The Victim Need's Assessment and I also briefly worked on the school's project.

What made you decide to get involved with research? I've always been interested in how research shapes the policy decisions we make and how we can use it to make informed decisions. I was in Dr. Rachel Garthe's statistics class my freshman year and after reaching out and meeting with her, she further confirmed my belief that research was something that I wanted to be involved with.

What’s your favorite thing about being a part of the Violence Prevention Research Lab? My favorite thing about being a part of the lab is meeting together every Friday. This team really knows how to show up and support one another and I wouldn't be the student I am today without them.

What would you say to someone considering getting involved with research? Don't be afraid to get started! Research can be very intimidating, but don't hesitate to put yourself out there and promote yourself.

Thanks for all that you do Riley!
