7th Graders Build Circuits and Begin Programming

Our 7th grade students are diving into the exciting world of computer science! Students have been building circuits and learning how electricity and electronic components work together. As they gain confidence with circuits, they are beginning to explore programming and learning how to give computers and devices instructions.

Through hands-on activities, students are developing problem-solving, creativity, and logical-thinking skills while having fun experimenting with technology. It’s exciting to see their curiosity grow as they discover that they can build something and then use programming to make it work!

National Champion Upton FBLA Chapter Kicks Off the Year with Root B**r Floats and Big Plans

Upton FBLA held its first meeting of the school year on August 25 during fifth period, welcoming new and returning members with root b**r floats and an exciting agenda for the year ahead.

President Lilly Jackson called the meeting to order at 11:44 a.m., with Secretary Paige Mills recording the minutes. Members opened the meeting by reciting the FBLA pledge, reaffirming their commitment to the organization’s mission, Code of Ethics, and development as community-minded business leaders.

The chapter welcomed 19 members in attendance, including several new members. Members introduced themselves and shared their T-shirt sizes as the chapter prepares for the upcoming FBLA year.

The group also reviewed highlights from last year's successful FBLA season. Among the accomplishments discussed was the chapter's outstanding performance at the National FBLA Conference in San Antonio, where Upton FBLA earned first place in the nation out of more than 5,000 chapters in the Champion Chapter competition.

Treasurer Alexis Savage reported that the chapter currently has a balance of $12,650.

Planning for a Busy Year
The officers presented a variety of activities and opportunities for members to consider. Members learned about parliamentary procedure and how to properly participate in FBLA meetings by being recognized before speaking.

Principal Samuelson and Activities Director Nick Johnson also spoke to the group about the benefits of being involved in FBLA and the opportunities the organization provides students.

An icebreaker gave members a chance to get to know one another better. Members tossed a ball around the room and shared their most memorable FBLA moments from the previous year.

The chapter also reviewed FBLA dress code expectations, attendance requirements, the importance of participating in chapter activities, and expectations for earning money to help fund national conference opportunities.
Members were encouraged to begin selecting their FBLA competitive events early. The officers explained that choosing events early will allow students more time to prepare for district and state competitions.

Community Service
Community service will be an important part of the chapter's activities this year. Members voted to participate in several service opportunities, including a Food Bank trick-or-treat project and a Veterans, Firefighters and Ambulance Appreciation Supper in November.

Members also discussed starting a backpack program to help provide needed supplies to students. Several members volunteered to help with planning the program.
A Community Service Committee was also formed, with Lexi, Abby, Rylee, Livy, and Lilly volunteering to help organize service projects throughout the year.

Fun and School Activities
The chapter voted to participate in a number of fun activities and community events. Members supported participating in Trunk or Treat with PTO, including the possibility of serving hot dogs, as well as a bowling activity.
Members were also encouraged to sign up if they would like to attend monthly Chamber of Commerce meetings, giving students an opportunity to learn more about local businesses and become involved in the community.

Looking Toward Competition
One of the biggest goals for the year will be preparing for FBLA competitive events and continuing the chapter's tradition of excellence.
Members voted to establish participation criteria for state events, including attending at least three FBLA meetings and completing three community service projects or fundraisers.

The chapter also voted to participate in the Champion Chapter program, continuing the work that helped Upton FBLA achieve national recognition last year.
Before traveling on any FBLA trips, members will also be required to review and return a signed Code of Conduct.

As the meeting came to a close, members were asked to share something positive they noticed during the meeting. One response described the meeting as “organized and well put together,” reflecting the officers' preparation and enthusiasm for the new FBLA year.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:14 p.m.
With a strong group of returning members, new students joining the organization, and a full calendar of competitions, service projects, fundraisers, and community activities, Upton FBLA is off to a great start for another successful year.
